Re: [MBZ] OT - lost baggage fiasco
Was this part of the 200 or so bags stolen recently and dumped in dumpsters, perhaps? I only got part of the news report, but seems that there was a theivery ring involving airline contract employees riffling bags for valuables then dumping them in the last couple days. I've never heard of a courier just dumping the bags and leaving before. Peter

You live in DC, Andrew. What do you expect? And don't tell me I don't understand: I worked there for a decade. Check the pawn shops on the south side of town. You will find your stuff. D. I am convinced the courier service is lying or left the luggage at the wrong house because we live on a quiet street with low crime (yes, this is possible in D.C.). The description of the drop off provided by the courier was so general that we cannot be certain they actually came to the correct address, or that if they did, they didn't steal the bags anyway. There are five (5) complaints of non-delivery against this courier for the same day from others who have not received their bags. I was in the garage, saw a truck pull in and pull out. Driver never went to the house. He claims that the bags were in the back of the truck when he left the airport but not when he got to their house. Probably flying down the highway and the wind sucked them out of the pickup. It looks like you have brought our attention a real problem. If you allow them to not place the bags in your hands, then you give them free rein to claim they delivered the bags when the never did. Short of suing them and putting the driver on the witness stand, or putting an ad in the paper asking for other victims to step forward, I don't have any good suggestion. Mitch.

That was in Houston, but it probably isn't isolated to there. Happy ending! The luggage had been dropped off at the wrong address. Curiously, the street NAME was wrong, not the house number. Hats off to my brilliant sig. oth, who dragged me to DCA to do battle with the courier and the airline baggage people. The courier boss finally allowed us to speak directly with the driver. Turns out the faux house had a similar side porch to ours, it was dark and late, etc. Thanks, Rich - your advice and it emboldened me. Re: [MBZ] OT - lost baggage fiasco
Moral of the experience: carry less impedimenta on your trips. I have a friend who travels internationally for weeks at a time, she can survive with one carry-on shoulder bag and her briefcase. I have no idea how she does it, but she has been doing it for years, and always looks lovely. I need at least 6 times that amount of stuff for reasons that have never been clear to me. Glad to hear things worked out. --R andrew strasfogel wrote: Happy ending! The luggage had been dropped off at the wrong address. Curiously, the street NAME was wrong, not the house number. Re: [MBZ] OT - lost baggage fiasco
A Veterinarian friend who did international sales for Eli Lilly got so fed up with baggage problems that after a few months he did all his travel with only a briefcase. It ahs been awhile, but IIRC he would go for almost a week that way. Every night he washed out clothes and hung them to dry. Worked for him; I'm just glad they put wheels on suitcases. [MBZ] OT - lost baggage fiasco
I need some collective wisdom to help us deal with a major loss of checked airline luggage. On our trip back to Washington, D.C. from Canada on New Year's day, three pieces of luggage didn't make it. We agreed to have the airline's courier service leave the bags on the side porch if we weren't home. The airline claims that the bags were dropped off on our side porch between 1 AM and 3 AM the next day (1/2), but they still aren't here!
