yes, clearly there are a lot of Amateurs that don't think things through
very well, and many that just don't want to think about it and/or

lost on all.
consider that most of the articles have been by people promoting
the item, and it's not hard to understand why they wouldn't be raising
the issue of legality.

If a kid is under 18 or living under your roof, they are entitled to only as
much privacy you decide they have earned. IMO, this hands-off parenting
(probably two generations of it) are the root of our current National
problems. "Kids" (including many 50-somethings) seem not to understand any
connection between behavior and consequences.

While I respect all those who make comments about "ethics" of monitoring
your child, I would like to point out that the ankle bracelet given by the
presiding judge [potential, in the future if bad behavior is not arrested]
will monitor location 24/7... also the Parole Officer will "drop in
unannounced" for anything, anytime. By current court practices, if either
method finds less than totally responsible behavior, the immediate next
stop is a concrete 6' X 9' "resting place" where a not so friendly
uniformed guard will control every moment of life for the court ordered
duration of sentence.

I am of course, going to worst case overkill [I hope] , not fully knowing

Over the past 20 years, I've been made guardian of 4 very troubled
teenagers and raised them past those troubles into rather upstanding
adults. In each case it was necessary to play "house rules hardball" with
them to re-set their course direction. In each case, I arranged a little
field trip to the local lockup [professional courtesy ] which was effective
in moving forward.

Life is about choices, making good ones and enjoying the result, or making

2012-05-26 Thread Walt Zarnoch
If it's more of a "the car is for work and work only" thing, then just
track the car using a cheapie walmart android phone and google latitude.

If it's to see where he is at all times, irrespective of cell coverage,
just get a satellite beacon ankle bracelet. At least then he'll know he's
being tracked, and it'd be a psychological deterrent...

Are you letting him see your location at all times as well?

Guess I'm torn both ways on the ethics of this, based on what is more
important to know location of.

The easiest would likely be to have a long father-son talk and set the
ground rules, zero tolerance, for the agreement to have the vehicle for
work.

Or have him pay his own insurance, registration, and gas, for his own
vehicle that he bought at fair market value, so he doesn't see it as "cool,
transportation at the cost of pops knowing where he thinks I am".

Re: [MBZ] OT gps phone tracking

2012-05-25 Thread Tim C
I've already told both of my older kids they should have no expectation of
privacy when they are using my things: computers, cars, tools, books, etc.
Trust but verify.

It means I can reward them if they are doing a good job. It also gives
them a reminder if they know I'll know they've been driving erratically, or
watching naughty videos (which is vulgar spongebob, at this point :), or
whatever, and they'll lose use of the thing. Hopefully I temper the peer
pressure a bit too.

I did know a woman who would track her husband by cell phone; she had a
thing that would respond to a text message with GPS coordinates. I thought
that was a little over the top, until I realized the husband was an
irresponsible wastrel and she'd have to make sure he was on his way to pick
up the kids, etc. Not sure it reflects on their relationship, exactly,
though it is kind of in the toilet because of the maturity difference.

Best,
Tim
does not track his wife

Re: [MBZ] OT gps phone tracking

2012-05-25 Thread G Mann
If keeping track is really an issue you might look into one of the GPS
devices that attach to the car and report position to your private internet
link to the device. A google search should give you several to choose from.
Real time tracking is possible and the device is cheaper than a trip
through rehab or a lawyer for Juvie.

An example is:
http://www.brickhousesecurity.com/realtime-gpstrackingsystem.html
"gps tracking device " search key [if I had one of these back in the
day, the divorce would have been so much cheaper... ;) ]
Just a thought.

Do you care where he is, or only where he was? If the latter, get an old
Android with no service plan* and wire it into the driver door or on top
of
the radio. Then install paw server and torque, log gps and obdii speed
and

acceleration data, and use cron and wget to download the log from the web
whenever he parks close enough to your wifi. That way you know how he's
been driving, where, and if your car has error codes.

There are scads of other trip loggers, but I think you'd enjoy the car
abilities of torque.

Sprint has a $5/month add-on that will live-track your phone, not sure
whether that uses GPS or triangulation. I suspect depending on a normal
phone's GPS is a nonstarter, I can barely keep the GPS antenna clear when
I'm trying. If he just kept it in his pants then you'd never know he left
home.

And don't try to track your wife with an onboard application, unless you
can convince her it's for her safety. ...

Best,
Tim

* An old Hero should cost about $25 on craigslist, an Optimus or original
Droid for $40. Almost anything would be serviceable for this application
though Motorola has the best reputation for antennae - I assume that would
mean they'd have better GPS reception.

First, get your amateur radio license - the technician will do, then mount
one of these http://www.byonics.com/mt-aio in his car - you'll always know
where the car is. That coupled with the cell phone tracker will give you a
good idea of where the kid is --

Just
did a google search and came up with this instamapper thing that is
free.
Anybody tried that? Any other ideas? Maybe I should put this on my
wifes

phone also.

Leave it at home and forward his calls/messages?
