[MBZ] Opinions on this trailer

2010-11-12 Thread Rich Thomas
I have been needing a trailer, see this one. At a pawn shop, girl there
says it has a "box" for brakes, does not know if they work. She thinks
it has 5000lb axles (is there anyway to check the load rating?) but some
of these things are 7000lb and 1lb. I'm thinking $1500 max, if
that. New ones are like $3500, so even if it needs some work...

Cool trailer! Looks like it means business. There may be a metal tag
somewhere near the tongue with the load rating for the trailer. Worth finding
that bit of info. Short of that, maybe you can ID the maker and then find more
info on the trailer from them.

Check the tires to make sure they are trailer tires, or at least truck tires.
Should have a maximum pressure of something like 65 psi or higher. Should be
bias-ply, NOT radial tires.

I'll bet that if it has electric brakes, you'll need to overhaul those
completely. Get a 12v winch from HF, mount that at front of trailer, and you
can drag home enough to make Kaleb jealous.

2010-11-12 Thread MG
I got a chance to look at the trailer. My advice is don't get it.
It has a dovetail or drop on the rear end. They are just slightly
easier to load but a friend who has one can't wait to get rid of
it down here. He has a lot of problems with dragging the rear end
on the ground. He got stuck one time with a tractor on it when he
was pulling out of a gas station. He had to unload the tractor to
get out onto the street again and then reload the tractor.
Luckily the tractor was operational. I hate to think of trying to
do that with a non running vehicle of any kind.

Re: [MBZ] Opinions on this trailer

2010-11-12 Thread Rich Thomas
Hmmm, good point. I borrowed a similar one a few weeks ago to haul a
load of timbers, the owner told me over bumps and humps it either
dragged the front or the back, I had his drop hitch on the truck. I can
see where that would be a problem, esp after I got stuck in my driveway
towing out a Bobcat on a flat trailer (soft sand after some rain), and
even in 4WD my truck was digging in. Ended up having to unload the
Bobcat (which was a bit problematic as I had backed the trailer down
into a bamboo thicket trying to get reoriented) then put a long chain on
the trailer and thence to the truck to pull it out a bit after I got the
truck extricated. If it had hung up the trailer it might still be
sitting there.

A big tractor trailer delivering my 30ft pilings (we told them not to
sent the 42 foot trlr) got stuck too at the same spot, took 2 hr to get
it loose and dug out, but it was also jammed in amongst some trees. Fun.

I drove by and looked at it quickly this aft, it looked a little ratty.

If that has 5 lug wheels, (1 1/16" X 1 3/8" spindles) the axles are most likely
3500#. If they are 6 lug they will be the 5000# axles. The smaller axle had a
1.980" bearing cap and the larger axle is somewhere around 2.328".

Why not radial tires? I use them all the time?

They sway more. Can be unpleasant with a heavily
loaded trailer.

My 7000# trailer is much rattier than that. No beavertail,
either, which might be a plus. A ratty trailer is handy, you
don't feel bad about banging it through the brush, etc.
It was $800 or $850, I forget which.

Well, when I was searching for tires for my boat trailer, I found that many
small truck tires had the correct load rating and I think they were all
bias-ply, and as I recall, in reading the Tire Rack material, radial tires were
difficult to find in the correct load rating for a trailer. If your trailer
and load never exceeds 2000 lbs, radial tires (single axle with two wheels)
would probably be fine.

If you ignore the load rating of the tires and just put on what fits, I think
you'll have a similar experience to Kaleb, and be changing tires frequently on
the side of the road.

I have been needing a trailer, see this one. At a pawn shop,
girl there
says it has a "box" for brakes, does not know if they work. She
thinks
it has 5000lb axles (is there anyway to check the load rating?)
but some

of these things are 7000lb and 1lb. I'm thinking $1500 max, if
that. New ones are like $3500, so even if it needs some work...

If you ignore the load rating of the tires and just put on what fits, I think

Re: [MBZ] Opinions on this trailer

2010-11-14 Thread MG
It has to do with the distance from the axles to the back of the
trailer vs the height of the tail end above the ground and how
big the bumps are that you usually encounter. For some shorter
trailers it may not be a problem in his case it is a continuous
problem. He is also contemplating cutting the tail off and
redoing it straight out.

RV inclined folks have learned that trailer tyres only last 7 years.
After that you are playing with a loaded gun.
I've done thousands of dollars in damage thru failed tire that looked
100% the day before they blew.

Ask anyone in the trade or with actual experience, they dry rot and fail.

No sign of bent axles AFAIK. Both were purchased new, I think they're a 2003 and

weight they're carrying. Now that you mention it, I think the tires do wear on
