I went to http://www.att.com/u-verse/shop/ (the official site ) and saw "Internet Only" packages with 24 Mbps for around $60 introductory rate. I think the link is http://att.com/new, especially if you have a mail-in offer. If you can't get at least $20 off, call them on the phone and ask for a better deal. I'm on a one year contract for their 3mb $41.99 service for $14.95, and I'm pretty sure that $27 a month off is where you want to be. After all, it's just DSL, so $60 is too much to pay. In Linux, all I do is change /etc/resolv.conf and I'm using different name servers. If you do it by IP and not by name, unless the router rejects DNS requests, I don't see why it would not work. Mitch wrote: > Rumor has it that their DNS > server is a good bit of the problem... I heard a story this week that DNS is going to open to whatever you want... for a price. Richarde who began this email list at mbz.org had an alternate DNS system that he was trying ICANN to adopt. I remember doing the setup to see the website atlantic.ocean - an interesting concept. Another 10 years and ICANN, who Richarde maintained were idiots, has come his direction. The problem? - atlantic.ocean would cost something like 200k. Yeah, that isn't gonna happen, except for the 1% - so... we are out of luck. mao ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

ATT here was offering internet only service, no phone line or other bundling required, for a decent price. Didn't look into it too much as it wasn't available in my neighborhood. "Kaleb C. Kaleb C. Striplin wrote: Anybody got AT&T uverse? Apparently it is now available to my address and is quite is less than half the price I am paying for sat for a 24mb connection rather than the 12 I have now with limited data. I've got 3mb, which is apparently as high as it goes out here in the sticks. Intro special at $14.95 a month for a year. Speedtest.net shows about 2.5-3mb, but if you watch it go, it's not steady progress, it jumps along in spurts. Actual loading of web pages can be very slow, nothing will happen for several seconds and then the page jumps up. Rumor has it that their DNS server is a good bit of the problem, I've got to get another router so I can try openDNS.org. (if you let the AT&T modem/router handle the router functions, you'll find that most of the settings are locked) Mitch. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
