Re: [MBZ] Plates

2012-12-22 Thread Dan Penoff
Despite our somewhat middle class neighborhood, the local kids (and ones that
are probably not so local) will walk through the neighborhood at night and try
the door handles of any cars parked outside. If unlocked, it's not uncommon
for them to steal GPS', sunglasses, etc., anything of value, no matter how
insignificant. I am not aware of them actually breaking and entering, but I
wouldn't be surprised if to comes to that some day.

I consider this stupidity on the part of the owners.

My car is parked inside, but my kid's cars are always parked outside, but
locked.

We have a friend who's son in law is a county sheriff, and he eats dinner at
their house every night at 10:00 pm when he's on duty, so if we see anything
amiss we'll call over to barbara's house so he can do a quick cruise through
the neighborhood on his way out.

...I see a lot of folks block out the license plates in the pics when
 selling
a car.  Why?  Who cares if someone knows your tag #?  What would someone
 do
with it?  Don't they realize they drive around showing it to strangers
everywhere they go?  Seems paranoid to me...

So true. It's absolutely pointless. My car has only the personalized rear
plate (two required but I'm a scofflaw) and is so unusual that I have to
explain it at least once weekly and I don't care.

My 2008 C300 has never had a front plate (and no bracket) for the 4.5 years
I've owned it and never been hassled. And, it's red.

Front plates are required here, BTW. I don't care, looks better with a bare

I like the idea, and would probably go for it myself, even at $150, but not
at $150 per annum.

I can think of a number of cars here in Canada that could benefit having
these on the front, rather than the US shape we currently have.

Rear plates only for NC, also. Late '57 - Mar '60 I lived in Lincoln, NE.
One Sat afternoon I was driving my '51 Chevy with black/yellow NC plate on
only the rear, of course, IAW NC law.
NE plates were also black/yellow, and from a distance, could be mistaken for
each other. Met NE highway patrolman; 'noticed his brake lights immediately
in my rear view mirror; I had no fear whatever as I watched him turn around
quickly and come rushing up behind me. NE required a front plate; I had
none, again, IAW NC law. I was at or below the speed limit and could think
of no other infraction I had committed (recently, anyway). He rushed up on
my rear bumper close enough to read, North Carolina, on the rear plate,
then quickly turned around and went on his way. This happened at a half
dozen times during my time in NE, but I was never stopped.
