Yeah other than the cost I like the filament-type LED bulbs. Pleasing
appearance and color temperature. We use those in the bathroom fixtures that
previously had clear-glass incandescents.

I have "cob" style bulbs in the exterior lights, and those have held up for at
least 5 years now.

The ones I have problems with are the ones that look like "traditional" frosted
incandescent bulbs. Even installed base-down in open-air lamps and fixtures
they seem to burn out about as often as incandescent bulbs did. I'm sure it's
the power supply electronics and not the actual LEDs that are dying, because
they usually start flickering before they die, sometimes buzzing, and in at
least one case releasing the magic smoke.

I'll probably look at buying the filament type bulbs as I deplete my supply of
the "standard" ones.

White LEDs are, at heart, fluorescent devices. Phosphors degrade.
I believe 'life' is defined as 50% brightness, assuming there wasn't
a catastrophic failure before that.

Heat, heat, heat. These are electronics, unlike their white-hot predecessors.
If they're in a fixture that doesn't allow free air circulation, for cooling
purposes,
they will _not_ last very long.

The 'filament' style LED bulbs have a big advantage in that their envelopes
are helium-filled. Helium having something like 10x the thermal conductivity
of air means that the entire glass envelope is acting like a heat sink. The
various
cob-style bulbs usually rely upon a more traditional metal heat sink of some
sort.

I've got something like 15 of the 40W-equivalent filament bulbs here now. All
are in high-use fixtures, most of them outside. The coach lamps outside are all
well ventilated, and only run at night anyway, and the interior entryway lamps
are
not bad. We've had exactly one failure, and that was when a freak
rain/wind-storm
managed to drive rain in that filled the globe in the entryway with water. The
bulb did not like operating submerged. The 'filament' is hermetically sealed,
in helium, but the power supply inside the screw base probably is not.

The three in the inverted bowl fixture in my office, which runs most of the day,
every day, shows no sign of degradation. IIRC we're a couple of years in to
using these, with only the one underwater failure.

These bulbs all run a _lot_, and are drawing about 1/10 the power of the
incandescents
they replaced, with no esthetic degradation whatsoever. Color me very happy.

depending on where you stand, etc. They claim 10x the light,
but it's coming from something barely larger than the original

Good point --- wonder if it's feasible to flip the LED panels over so the light

Also the "10x brighter" claim is compared to a 60W incandescent light. I use
100W bulbs in the garage already, 60W is just not adequate. So it's maybe more like 5x
brighter, spread over the three panels. Might not be too bad.

I use 60W-equivalent LED's. They're only there in case the relay circuit
that drives the 1000W-equivalent fluorescent/LED array is down. Enough
to see, but not enough to work under. Two, in case one burned out. They
were actual incandescents until fairly recently. 100W was brighter, but didn't
last very long. The 60W bulbs lasted nicely, but eventually got LED's from
a Costco pack we bought.

All our CFL's are being replaced with LED's now, as they fail. Except for the
camera
lighting daylight-balanced CFL's, which do work very well for that specialized
purpose.

Everything that's on a lot is already LED. CFL's still in laundry room, maybe
one
or two other places. Incandescents aplenty in rarely-used lights. And the
decorative
globes in the finished basement. (I haven't seen LED replacements in that form
factor.)

Better, overall, are either larger diffused fixtures, or indirect
(ceiling bounce) lighting that makes for a softer, more even light.
Lighting can be bright and not harsh, but it takes more work.

The best light in my garage is currently coming from the two-bulb
4' fluorescent fixtures that are in large boxes with waffle-pattern
styrene diffusers over them. They have overbright LED tube
replacements (Costco) in them, but are tamed nicely by the diffusers.
Second-best are the 8' HO tubes. None of these are 'too bright',
even if you stare directly at them.

I am sensitve to strobing/scanning at 60Hz or below. Back in the days of CRT
computer screens I had to set a fast refresh rate or I'd get a headache looking
at what I percieved to be a rapidly flickering screen.

Flourescents in pairs don't bother me (I presume they are wired in opposite
phase) but single tubes sometimes do. I guess it depends on how rapidly the
phosphor glow decays, maybe cheap tubes use a thinner phosphor coating and
appear to flicker more?

Re: [MBZ] Replacement for florescent shop lights

2023-03-27 Thread Curt Raymond via Mercedes
I bought around that time to use as a studio light. It works well but strobes
at certain angles. I have to be very careful where I put the camera. The
strobeing is not visible to the naked eye but the camera makes it painfully
obvious.

Re: [MBZ] Replacement for florescent shop lights

2023-03-27 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
> Costco had some LED replacement “tubes” for fluorescent fixtures. I put in a
> couple and they work well.

I like those well enough, and they work in most fixtures. (Some others I tried
did not.)
I have a lot of random 4' fluorescent fixtures in the old garage. The
ultra-cheap buzzy
ones (electronic ballasts) chew through tubes like they're free. The more
expensive
ones with traditional magnetic ballasts are still on the original tubes.

The Costco LED replacements are brighter than the tubes, which is good in the
fixtures
that have diffusers, but not so good in the exposed-tube ones, as they tend to
make one
squint when it comes into eyeline. I really hate lights that are so bright
that I have to be
careful not to look at one.

The new garage has a lot of twin-8' high-output/low-temperature fixtures in it.
 Nobody
seems to make LED tube replacements for those.

Re: [MBZ] Replacement for florescent shop lights

2023-03-26 Thread G Mann via Mercedes
In my experience with fluorescent lights, what fails first and most often
are the ballasts. Once they fail, or start to fail, the start circuit that
fires the fluorescent gas in the tubes to make light don't fire.
Thus my suggestion to make the conversion to full LED assemblies and be
done with the old fluorescents. You will be amazed at how much light the
LED's put into the shop.

2023-03-26 Thread Peter Frederick via Mercedes
I bought direct wired LED 8’ lamps for mine. A bit expensive, and you have to
re-wire the fixtures, but it’s been six or seven years and they all work just
fine.

Mine are the old single pin type, probably 70 years old.

If yours are dual pin on each end, you can probably get drop in replacements,
but if you are having ballast issues, go for the replacements that delete the
ballast.

Look on superbrightleds.com -- they show you the different cases and what
you need to do.

Some LED bulbs (like the ones I bought) can be run directly off the
120VAC, so you can cut out the ballast and wire one side of the AC to one
end's tombstone and the other side of the AC to the other end's tombstone.

I got a couple of those from the Costco in Albuquerque about 3 years ago
and they do work great, but Costco has not carried them since.

You can get the same thing from superbrightleds, the site I linked in my
other email (and I did). Some of them you remove the ballast, some of
them you change the ballast wiring, some of them you just put in instead
of fluorescent tubes -- just pay attention to what you buy.

Costco had some LED replacement “tubes” for fluorescent fixtures. I put in a

I have some of those 3-wing screw-in LED things that are really bright. I like

4' LED units, on sale at Harbor Freight. Low power draw per unit of useful
light, They can be daisy chained to make any multiple of 4', if you want,
and they are cheap enough on sale that if they fail for any reason, trash
them and replace with new. [Presuming money is no object, of course.]
They will plug and play anywhere your current units are.

I installed several of these 5 years ago and love them. Unfortunately they
are no longer available. You might be able to find something similar.

[MBZ] Replacement for florescent shop lights

2023-03-26 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Most of the lights in the shop are dual 8' units and some of them I have
replaced the ballasts and/or bulbs.  Some of of them have since quit
working again.  Some of them I replaced with 8' units with 4 4' bulbs
which seem brighter than the 2 8' bulbs.  I have new bulbs for both
style but honestly hate messing with them.  What is a good replacement
for these?  I am not talking about replacing all units at once, just as
they die instead of jacking around with them swap out the light with
something else.  What have you used in your shops that work well and are
not a hassle?
