[MBZ] Replenishing Fan Clutch Fluid/addendum
This was covered pretty well a while back by Jim C, I think. If I am giving credit to the wrong person, please correct me, I am going from an old fart's memory--mine! Maybe it was even on the Ridder list that I was kicked off of for using AOL! Reading my Spring, 07, issue of Corvette Restorer, they did a similar article calling them Schwitzer style fan clutches. They mentioned using the Toyota sourced oils in 3000, 6000, or 1 centistoke viscosities. They mentioned Mercedes and BMW owners were active in this pursuit. The added info suggests leaning towards the 3000 level, which would be the thickest, and sourcing your oil from a good hobby shop dealing in radio controlled cars. the 3000 level silicone fluid is used in the RC car differentials! The cost was quoted as $7 for 50ml, vs $15 for Toyota's 18ml bottle. Since an empty fan clutch may need 30 to 40ml, this could be a considerable cost savings, especially if it tends to leak out again over time. Maybe we should re-visit the whole procedure using the newly discovered silicone fluid. My 79 fan clutch definitely free wheels a lot, even on the hottest days. Re: [MBZ] Replenishing Fan Clutch Fluid/addendum
I was kicked off years ago, rejoined. Left on my own not too long ago when anytime I posted anything my posts were help for moderator approval. Then when I tried to post a car for sale, I get 50 questions about if its mine or not etc. Then the final straw was when I was going to post some project cars I was basically accused of selling stolen cars by Hank. That was it. [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: This was covered pretty well a while back by Jim C, I think. Re: [MBZ] Replenishing Fan Clutch Fluid/addendum
Schwitzer style fan clutches. They mentioned using the Toyota sourced oils in 3000, 6000, or 1 centistoke viscosities. I found a source for a gallon of 12,500 cst oil, and had divvied it up by selling pints off to other guys interested in experimentation. The number goes up with increasing viscosity, and there was some thought that the 12.5k stuff (boob lube?) was perhaps too thick. I do not know if this was definitively established. I myself have not used my remaining pint for anything. Yet. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new parts see official list sponsor: http://www.buymbparts.com/ For used parts email [EMAIL PROTECTED] To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Oh, and my source at the time only offered 350, 1000, and 12500 viscosities. I sold the excess pints off for something like $10 each. Their price has gone up 50% since then.

I stand corrected as to the thickness (viscosity) increases with the number, just like oil. 3000 cs silicone should flow into the tiny hole much easier that 12.5K cs, though it MAY leak out easier too. The article mentions heating the fan clutch gently to about 225 degrees before adding the fluid into the clutch. It also suggested adding fluid in 4ml packets, then spinning it to see if it is coupling up. With the control pin removed, coupling would be maximized, something you probably can feel.
