need to get that sorted.  It's in pretty good shape too, just this weird
issue.

That would be a drive into Honduras to get to a gulf port. Or through
Guatemala, which has a port as well.

An adventure. Will need lots of cash to pay off border guards to get out of El
Salvador, into and out of Guatemala, and in and out of Mexico. There are “pest
control” stations where they spray the undersides with fluid. Sort of like
California, but the uzi toting fellows want to collect the fee on the spot.

Maybe best to have a crew to allow 24/7 mobility. Put large fuel tanks on the

Six hour shifts, GPS, and have the trucks serviced prior to setting the convoy

When I get the new passport, I would gladly assist in driving one back.

El Salvador is vicious gang country, unlike being just crazy paramilitary nuts
the last time I visited. Probably safer than driving in MN, WA or OR. Nobody
puts up with Burn Loot Murder agenda there. Dark folk are rare and not loved
or much tolerated in Central America. Well, except for Belize, but that is due
to the UK.

Pricing is a bit too much for condition, location, and expected abuses over
their lifetime

Indiana. SonSet Solutions withdrew its offer for me to join them as a

told they were used to waiting up to five years for people to raise
support. Since it had only been four and since we were actively working
with a real estate agent and looking for a house to buy and were planning
a trip to purchase a house, we were quite shocked, to say the least. They
said they now had enough engineers and didn't need me.

We still have to move, however, because the place in which we are
currently living is not really suitable as a long-term dwelling and is
quite expensive. That's not even considering the dusty environs in which
the building is situated and my health problems with dust.

Last September, when we were poised to haul 1000 disaster relief buckets
for our denomination's relief group, but were later told the buckets
would not be available, one of the places at which I looked to provide
assistance was Samaritan's Purse (the ministry which does the Operation
Christmas Child) in North Carolina. Nothing came of that at the time, but
I have looked at them again since February.

I called a college friend of mine who lives in North Carolina and asked
him what it was like. His bottom-line assessment was that he likes it.

We plan to head east tomorrow morning to explore what is back there.
Exactly how long we will be gone and where all we will go remains to be
seen. I do know the U.S. Postal Service will hold our mail for up to 30
days, so we have the potential for being on the road for a month.

Currently, I plan on driving to Charlotte, North Carolina, and visiting
the college friend of mine, then exploring the Boone and North Wilkesboro
area where Samaritan's Purse is located, then exploring Waxhaw, NC, where
JAARS (Jungle Aviation and Radio Service, another missionary
organization) is.

We may even take a jaunt down to Chucktown to visit the dynamic duo who
run the Southeast Mercedes Rescue Association.

We then plan on driving to New Jersey so I can talk with the people who
sold me an ARB refrigerator that doesn't hold temperature very well.
After that is the Hudson Valley of New York, where some friends run a
Christian radio station network.

After that, we will drive to Kentucky, where we will visit Answers in
Genesis and the Kentucky Trailer company, which manufactured our 51'
drop-frame furniture van, so I can ask them some questions.

Then we will head through Missouri, where we will hopefully visit with
Philip (fmiser) and stop at 4 State Trucks, a heavy truck accessory
seller, and then back through Oklahoma and to home in New Mexico.

All in all, about 6000 miles.

largest chrome shop. It is big, at any rate, and they have a huge
selection of truck accessories. It is just west of Davenport.

Re: [MBZ] Road Trip

2017-09-20 Thread Curley McLain via Mercedes
The white smoke on the right side of the engine at startup (and soot the
rest of the time) is likely the small SS flexible tube connecting the
front exhaust manifold to the rear exhaust manifold. It is also
possible that the dongle on the front of the front exhaust pipe is
leaking if it has not been deleted and plugged. A third possibility is
the flex hose on the exhaust pipe below the turbo. But in my
experience, the short SS flex coupler is the culprit. It only soots up
the engine compartment if you let it leak. The proper fix is to remove
the front manifold and replace it. It probably could be patched with a
fiberglass exhaust pipe repair.

I've let mine leak until I need to get the turbo off, then take off the
front manifold.

injector return lines are cheap.

Maybe the seller will provide you with a set of injector holders to
rebuild and then replace the current leaky nozzle holder along with the
others and the nozzles.

Perhaps that's explained by weeping injector fuel return lines, very loud
klatta and rough running when it's first started, and an injector (#4?)
that is leaking at the joint in its body. In addition, when it's first
started and running rough, it periodically puts white smoke out the tail
pipe and some place on the right side of the engine.

So, we went to Dallas for the Great American Trucking Show on 23 August and
then to Austin to visit friends we made while I was in graduate school at UT.

The 1990 E300D drove fairly well. The only real problem we had was when the
right rear tire picked up a nail and left us stranded because the spare I had
aired up before we left had no air in it, because it, too, had a nail in it!

We drove 1628 miles and used 58.329 gallons of diesel for a fuel economy of
27.91 mpg.

There were a few idiosyncracies, about which I will ask in separate emails.

Pencil toaster racks had been upgraded. We only have 1 0r 2 really cold
winter mornings here unlike Curt so just glowed.

Had my 300D 2.5t for 11 winters. It has heater but I only used it once.
Recall Dr. Booth saying a cold morning start for a diesel is a compression
test. Just stubborn.

Wonder what you could have done with a block heater and a hair dryer.
Or, for that matter, how a parallel plug car (79 was pencils, right?) would
do with the toaster racks mounted inside the intake manifold.

The serial plug cars had the toaster racks; the parallel plug cars had
none. IIRC, the transition was 1980.5, so a '79 would be serial plugs.

Re: [MBZ] Road Trip

2017-08-02 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes
Mine? This is when I was driving from Houston to western KY and back.
WMemphis supper time when coming from Houston, lunch time when coming
from WKY. Worked out great, there was a gas station 2 buildings down
from the Q joint, which is how I discovered it, getting gas there and
smelling the smoke, asked some local where that was coming from, he
pointed out the place. Last time I stopped there it was gone, I went to
a Wendy's across the street and asked the women in there what happened
to Ray. "Oh he place bun down so he move ovah dat new place, wheah it
at? Oh yeah, it ovah deah bah whatever." I never went to the new
place as the directions were a bit vague and that was before internets
on the phone.

The celebration includes a memorial to Chuck.

Includes a bit of air travel to get there in time.

Maybe Wilton can wrangle us a C-117 to transport us there and back, or
Max could do the navy equivalent.

BTW, the Hawaii section bylaws were patterned from the Iowa Section
bylaws. Kathy Kennel at the time said the Iowa section was not the biggest
but one of the best run sections.

[MBZ] Road Trip!

2015-02-28 Thread Craig via Mercedes
Shirley and I are in Carlsbad, New Mexico, today, having driven down from
Los Alamos yesterday. It's cold here and parts of the drive were foggy,
making for difficult driving.

The '95 E320 performed flawlessly on the jaunt. On the way to breakfast
this morning, however, someone pulled along side us and started honking.
I pulled off the road into a vet clinic's parking lot and he told me we
had a tire going flat. Sure enough, the right rear rim was about an inch
from the pavement. I swapped with the spare, noting the spare's DOT
number ended with 0601. Hmmm ... week 6 of 2001. I'd better not trust
that tire too much, either!

Hopefully the weather will be better when we drive back on Monday ...

Re: [MBZ] Road trip!

2014-07-10 Thread Rich Thomas

Yeah I looked at that too. Sweet.

I was over launching my kayaks a few weeks back and there was this
really hot chick maybe mid 30s who was putting a coupla kayaks into a
tall long Sprinter van. There were 2 or 3 boys around who appeared to
be hers. The van was outfitted with seats and then racks in back for
toys, including the yaks and bikes below and some other stuff (cooler,
etc.) It was all made of oak, she said some friend fabbed it up for
them. I forget where they were from, but she said they did lots of road
trips and with the boys and all their impedimenta the thing fit their
needs well. I was drooling (about the van).

[MBZ] Road trip

2013-06-14 Thread Rich Thomas
Just drove the 84 300SD Mamabenz from CHS to Chapel Hill, 300 mi or so, 75-80
most of the way, AC BLOWING ICE COLD in 85Fish temps (I had to set temp a bit
warmer it was freezing me). 25mpg. It really likes to run hard. Stopped to
get fuel and some guy at next pump was very complimentary.

I love that car on the road. First time I have taken it on a trip since I
rebuilt front suspension, it road and handled very well.

True dat. Noticed too no smoking from exhaust, I think a lot of the gunk
cleaned out. Feels a bit rough at idle, might need to change mounts.

My first W126 was an 82 300SD that I bought in 1997. I traveled heavily at that
time within the state, and I will say to this day I have never had a more
comfortable, better riding car than it was.

I think I put over 100k on that car before I sold it. One of the best and most
reliable MBs I have owned.
