I have been using wheel bearing or axle grease on battery terminals for decades and it is rare to see any corrosion on any terminal. I also use it on pretty much any electrical joint. I fill crimp terminals before crimping, slather it on lamp sockets, coat the pins and sockets on plug connections. I use it on anything from 115 VAC light bulb threads to mic level audio (mV). I have never had any problem with any connections treated with "plain" grease. In some high heat situations (say, headlight sockets) the grease doesn't fair so well long term and will get dry and crusty. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

grease gun grease works too. moly, or the red stuff. WHeel bearing grease also works on batt'ry posts. Re: [MBZ] Sdl strange electrical issue
Dielectric grease _is_ an insulator, but it's mechanically so weak that it's no impediment to the electrical contacts. It's a barrier only to oxygen, moisture, and corrosion. The point of this grease _is_ that it's an insulator, and so doesn't affect the normal operation of switches and contacts, etc. If it was conductive, it'd be a real problem in some situations. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

Dielectric grease seals out moisture and preserves the connection. thus retards corrosion. It is not an insulator, although, many think that it is. Vaseline also works on battery terminals, but it doesn't have the staying power of dielectric grease. What's the difference between dielectric grease and axle (or any other kind) grease? How does applying an insulator improve an electrical connection? CBT Clean, Bright, Tight . is the rule. When you take the cable clamps off, look for black oxide coating on the posts and cables. This material is apparently the greatest insulator known. It kills battery connection completely. Once clean, I always coat the posts with dielectric grease. Seems to preserve the surface nicely. [MBZ] Sdl strange electrical issue
So I drove the sdl all over tulsa today running errands. Made several stops. When I started it back up once it had the problem. Started it cured it like normal. When I got ready to leave from the next stop the car was completely dead. No power at all. I checked the battery connections and while tight, the positive cable did move just a hair. So it appeared tight but not completely. Jiggled it a slight amount and car started. I bet this has been the issue all along.
