Does he have a DD-214 (official record of service and discharge); earlier

Thanks for the clarification! Somewhere along the line, I had missed
the USAAF designation change in 1941. I have heard that but always
thought it was a confusion between USAAC and USAF.

Billy Mitchell, Eddie Rickenbacher, Hap Arnold and Jimmy Dolittle
pretty well covered the first part, and WIlton has covered the
post-WWII period for us.

About '51 or '52. AFROTC instructors at NC State College, Raleigh, were
still wearing Army green occasionally at that time. Army uniform styling
persisted for MANY years. I wore blue Ike jacket occasionally well into

When I was learning to fly airplanes lo those many years ago, my ground
school instructor was a guy who had been a ferry pilot in WW2, taking
planes from FL to SA to Africa. During the part about navigation he
told us the story of how when he flew there he would leave FL, fly
south, figure where they were when they saw land, then decide where to
go from there, turn right or left or whatever. Then flying to Africa
they would head east, do the same thing. He said they passed the time
playing cards, reading, and whatnot, while all the other crews were
going crazy doing celestial fixes and such the whole way, and he would
usually arrive within 15min of those guys without all the drama.
