Someone told me to use brass polish, but that sounds a bit
 aggressive ...

If it's sticky, almost any light oil will work. WD-40, Kroil, or (my
favorite) lighter fuel. If it's gotten crispy, often mechanical means
are best, such as a razor-blade knife, gasket scraper, or putty knife.

If those don't seem to be disolving the mess, you could try denatured
alcohol, acetone, or mineral spirits. I did once use MEK (methel ethyl
keytone)(sp?) - but that stuff is pretty nasty to handle!

I recently fixed my busted sunroof - both 'lifting arms' were broken -
into

3 parts on one side, 4 on the other !

Well fixable by any reasonably home mechanic, but read the MB CD !

Rubbing alcohol or (carefully) mineral spirits.

Peanut butter works like a charm. Elbow grease and PB have removed a host of
bumper sticker stuff

Over here in the states I've heard good things about Goo Gone which one
would get from Wal-Mart. Not sure what you might find on your side of the

Congratulations, I wish I had the testicle fortitude to disassemble my
sunroof. It needs Angles and I've been told that the requirement to
work on it is degree issued in the fatherland to a precious few.

Some times, peanut butter will loosen sticky stuff, it will do no harm
to try. Smear it on, cover with plastic wrap for a few hours.

Let me add my voice to the Goo Gone crowd. It will take off the goo with no
damage to the car. Not so sure about acetone

Lighter Fluid (Zippo brand works best). It will take it right off.
