Maybe a 1k car for someone looking to strip it apart but as far as one
of the best driving machines ever you would be hard pressed to find better.
Far as the reverse goes, may be it needs new shifter bushings or some
new ATF.

OK this is what I was asking originally. The "sometimes doesn't go into
reverse" is that a symptom of a fatal problem or more likely something easily
repaired (like the B2 failure in the older cars).

For some reason I was thinking this car had a laundry list of problems, must
have confused it with another W124. Mileage is undisclosed, but for now I'll
assume it's high enough to keep the retail value at or below $3200.
Then you have the tranny problem, which may be missing shift bushings but is
more likely to be a tranny so worn that the delay on shifting into reverse is
approaching infinity.

Best case for the rest of the car and worst case for the tranny, you pay $2200
to have a rebuilt tranny installed, everything else is top-top, and the
resulting car is worth $3k or maybe a bit more. In reality, if it's worn out the
tranny, it probably needs a good bit of suspension work and maybe a valve job.

OK for some reason I thought I '95 would be worth more. But you're right. I
found out it has 220K miles so a worn-out tranny would not be unsurprising.
Also do these have the biodegradable wiring problems?

   Per MBUSA: Eligibility

 Empty heading

 (1) What are the eligible vehicles that will receive an
 Emission Modification?

   This settlement pertains specifically to MY09 to MY16 BlueTEC II
   vehicles with OM642 and OM651 engines sold or leased in the US.

   How Do I Know if My Car Is Affected?

Seven affected models span the 2009-16 model years. All the cars in
question have turbo-diesel engines — some offered as standard equipment,
others as an optional engine — and almost all were marketed as Bluetec.
Similarly, Bluetec-equipped Sprinter vans, sold under the Mercedes-Benz
and Freightliner brands, are affected for the 2010-16 model years.

According to the EPA
,
affected models are:

 * *Sprinter: *2010-16 Sprinter six-cylinder, 2014-16 Sprinter
   four-cylinder
 * *E-Class:*2011-13 E350 Bluetec, 2014-16 E250 Bluetec
 * *GL-Class: *2009 GL320 Bluetec, 2010-16 GL350 Bluetec
 * *GLK-Class:*2013-15 GLK250 Bluetec
 * *M/GLE Class:*2009 ML320 Bluetec, 2010-14 ML350 Bluetec, 2015 ML250
   Bluetec, 2016 GLE300d
 * *R-Class:*2009 R320 Bluetec, 2010-12 R350 Bluetec
 * *S-Class:*2012-13 S350 Bluetec

   What Does the Repair Entail?

The repair comprises a software update and replacement of
vehicle-specific hardware, such as sensors and catalysts. Daimler must
also furnish an extended warranty to cover affected software and
hardware, with tests performed annually for five years to ensure
affected cars continue to meet emissions standards down the road.

Specific repairs vary, and in some cases aren’t even finalized. Twelve
subgroups exist within the affected vehicle population, according to the
EPA
,
with specific repairs for each group. All will receive a software update
and new nitrogen oxide sensors, and any vehicles without a copper
catalyst will get one, as well. Beyond that, specifics vary. As of this
writing, the agency says it’s approved repairs for five of the 12
groups, encompassing the 2013-15 GLK250 Bluetec, 2015 ML250 Bluetec,
2016 GLE300d and six-cylinder 2010-16 Sprinter. Repairs for other groups
are set for approval from now through 2021.

   Will the Repair Cost Anything?

No. Repairs should be free for owners. Under the terms of the
settlement, Daimler will recall and repair vehicles at no cost to
consumers, the Justice Department said.

2024-07-13 Thread Kaleb Striplin via Mercedes
Even if it’s not covered under warranty it’s easy to clean out. Remove it from
the car. Spray a couple of cans of engine degreaser down it and let it sit for
an hour. Flush with water. Next seal up the openings on one end and turn it up
end to end best you can. Fill it up with a solution of 1:4 muriatic acid and
water. Let sit for an hour. Flush with water and should be good to go.

Re: [MBZ] This could be a good deal

2024-07-13 Thread Floyd Thursby via Mercedes

Thanks.

I got the VIN from the guy and ran it on the MBUSA site.  Looks like all
these repairs were done last year 2/7/23 but he's saying DPF needs to be
cleaned.  The report says there is a warranty of 4yr 48kmi on the
repair, he says the car has 165,000 miles so that would still be covered
since the repairs were only 9kmi ago.  Weird, maybe he bought it after
the repairs were done and he is unaware or there is something else wrong
with it.  I'll take the computer and scan it and see what else pops up
for faults, but I would think with all this work the thing should be in
good shape.  From the pics it looks pretty nice.

I'm going to drive up there and look at it tomorrow and see if I can
make a deal, maybe offer $3k, it was listed a week ago and I think he
dropped the price already.  It's not too far from Columbia, I'll check
with MBUSA on Monday and see if there is still coverage on it and if I
buy it get it to the stealer in Columbia which isn't too far and let
them deal with it under the warranty. Maybe they'll even send a flatbed
to pick it up!

Hopes not too high but worth a little road trip, could turn out to be an
excellent deal.

Has it here for $3500

Actually I got here (actually to a DG about 1/4mi from where the car is) about
an hour ago then the guy tells me he is on his way from Charlotte and had to
feed a turtle or something. (YCMTSU) Apparently his son was handling the
messages. so anyway I talked to him and I’m waiting for him, the car is at this
property in the country he bought just down the road but there’s a locked gate.
He should be here in 20min or so. Apparently the thing drives as he said he
would drive it to the DG and meet me but I said I could go back to wherever it
is. I’m in the GL so offroad time!

He said a guy offered $3k sight unseen last night so I guess that’s my number.
That’s what I was thinking anyway if it checks out. I’ll have to figure out
logistics of getting it from here to wherever, I don’t have the trailer with
me.

Turns out I’m only about 40mi from where my daughter lives, a drive through the
country. There’s not a lot around here. The nearest little town is basically a
shithole. I stopped at a ratty gas station convenience store to pee and get a
drank, gave the woman a fidolla bill, she gave that back and dollar 36 change.
Sigh. It took awhile to get her to understand why I was giving her the fiver
and asking for a one. Sigh. The crackhead in there was all chatty though so
there’s that. Friendly place!

Adventures!

Scan and see what is going on, check over various connections and hoses,
probably not anything too critical.

Vehicle will run fine at times and other times will idle high and stall

That is an absolute steal. Lock it in the barn for another 20 years and
voila - your retirement is fully funded.

After you deduct the $5k it costs to locate a competent mechanic that can sort
out the fuel system. Pre-facelift R129s are nightmarish in this regard, not to
mention some of the other issues they had.

Is there anyone on this list young enough to still be working and not
retired in 20 years (exccept maybe Curt)? If so, you are likely correct
that it will fund their retirement because they won't likely make it
more than another year or two after that.

My hugest regret is turning down a 1948 Cadillac convertible b/c I couldn't
afford the $400 asking price.

Glow plug controller, easy fix but not sure why it would be in limp
mode.  This is tempting but no hitch

It is now in limp mode and has CEL- P0670. I'm told it could be an easy
fix but after having to replace the front air shocks, because it was
being driven less, I'm over it and want it gone.
