Sounds like it needs a smaller turbo that would spin up faster. My Jetta is on
boost by about 1200rpm...

It seems to lack off-the-line torque.  Once the turbo spools up, about 2000
RPM, it's fine.  I suspect
gearing, and the extra-tall tires.  (Truck 'should' have 215/75R15, but has
265/75/R16, which
at 31.6" are 4" taller, resulting in 2" more ground clearance and higher
gearing.)  It's OK, but
imbalanced feeling.  Especially when compared to my lamented 200D W115,
which had at
best half the horsepower.  The truck will clearly go faster, but feels less
driveable.

This very truck is, I believe, what you will get when you Google the
mating. So, if that is indeed
the case, the two flywheels were mated in some fashion, and a bell adapter
fabricated. I have not
looked closely, as I guess I don't really care.

An oil gauge should be easy to rig with parts from a 123.

There is a mechanical gauge, it just needs to be hooked up. I think it's
fairly important to do so,
before it hits the woods. The oil cooler is mounted below the radiator,
and is most out in harm's
way. I'm thinking about more of a cowcatcher front-end protection scheme.

Diesels normally have pretty decent torque so I am surprised that it
lacks it. I might have guessed it would be the other way around and it
would be a stump puller.

The 16" wheels are Toyota wheels, they've got center logo caps. The
protruding hub
lockers on the front prevent them from being used there.

Thumb starter switch, a toggle for glow/kill. Key does nothing but power
the gauges, etc.
I like its crude elegance, but wish the original instrument cluster could
have been preserved.

Glow plugs hooked up with a Ford starter relay, 12ga wiring somewhat
inadequate, since
it's a single wire to one plug and chained to the others. Motor mounts
standard Benz,
screwed to perches welded forwards of the originals. Left side mount oily
and collapsed.

Strange blowby oil recovery system. Stuff there, not sure about it, a
couple of metal
bottles, like pill bottles in size.

Son dislikes the name "Mazcedes", prefers "Otto von Hirohito."

2018-05-26 Thread Jim Cathey via Mercedes
I picked up the truck today. Drives surprisingly well, but the overall
experience is
crude, Unimog-ish. At idle it's very noisy and vibratory. At freeway
speeds it
smooths right out. Boost gauge goes up to about 14 PSI before the overboost
cutout drops it back to 10. Has very little low-end torque, feels like the
190D
rather than the 200D, which has a very truck-like feel. You need to keep
the
RPM up on this to keep power on. It'll be fine, regardless.

The original conversion was a non-turbo engine. The next owner switched
it out for a turbo motor. The next owner sold off the spare motor, and then
eventually sold me the truck.

Pix and stuff to follow, when time allows.
