On my 617 diesel, when you remove the cap, a stiff spring pushes out.   Not 
insurmountable, and I don't see why you can't remove yours and replace the  
sealing washer, or just add a little thread sealant to the existing  washer.

I believe you've misinterpreted the instructions in 05-7800HA. It says 
that the tensioner must not be serviced but must be replaced as a unit. 
It also says that the seal must be replaced. If you have a leak, replace 
the seal. If that doesn't cure the problem, then the tensioner assembly 
must be replaced along with a new seal.
