Re: [MBZ] Wilton needs this for his new ride

2016-07-13 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Sounds like a similar experience I had with my big brother when he had a 1968
Pontiac Firebird with the 400 CI engine, Hurst factory shifter and some
outrageous stock rear end. It was yellow with a black top.

He picked me up after basketball practice one night and drove me home.

When I walked in to the house, Mom and Dad were sitting in their usual spots in
the family room. Mom puts down her book, Dad his Wall Street Journal, and both
say almost simultaneously, “Are you OK? You look like you just saw a ghost.”

“Nope. I’m fine.” Head to room without further discussion.

First and last time I ever rode with my brother when he had that car.

2016-07-13 Thread Meade Dillon via Mercedes
One of my teachers in high school would sometimes entertain us with tales
from his youth in small town Iowa, he and his brothers would compete to see
who had the fastest ride, which of course meant there had to be a test of
some sort to prove who had the fastest ride. He recounted how one day his
big brother rolled up to the house in a '56 or '57 Chevy, rolled down the
window and told him to get in for a "test ride". Teacher (probably about
15 or 16 at the time) knew he was in trouble because the car was shaking
really hard at idle, his brother had to shout to be heard, and there were
no seat belts of course. He couldn't show any fear in front of his older
brother, so he obliged and got in, and the resulting "test drive" was so
terrifying that when they returned home, he got out and turned to his
brother and basically said "You win, and I am never going to ride in
another car with you driving again."

So those stories illustrate where my ideas for a rat rod come from.
Probably not going to get there, messing around with mechanical injection
compression ignition...

My ideal rat rod would simply exude danger and power, with no gimmicks.
Painted with primer, no added nothing but noise and power.

In college one summer Saturday night I was driving home after a second
shift at a food warehouse, '63 Beetle. Coming up on a red light, there's
a jacked up camaro, 70's, primer paint, huge slicks on the rear axle.
He's stopped in the right lane, I'm coasting up the left trying to time it
so I hit the light rolling in first and can blast right by him. I time it
right, blow right by with the flat four air cooled engine wailing and
shift into second, watching him the rear view mirror now.

I see and hear him launch, front end lifts but the front wheels don't,
smoke rolling from both rear slicks and it sound like no muffler at all on
that V8.

I started rolling up windows and reaching to close the sunroof (huge
canvas affair), too late. Camaro burns past, tire smoke engulfs me, I
kept smiling until I fell asleep later that night.

2016-07-13 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes

I am now a UROlogist!

Seriously, I am a troublemaker in the local community. I called myself
an agitator until a friend pointed out that was a no-no around here as
that was what the old crackas called the black folks who came here to
stir things up back in the 60s. It is still a bit of sore point though
my good friend who was a major agitator back then loves it and eggs me
on. I hear there is a future in it. Maybe when we finally win the
Waawww it will be OK.

I speak Truth to Power and they don't like it. I am a part of a cabal
in that regard, they fear our presence at their schemings. Even when we
aren't there we live in their minds. The gummint does not like the
subjects to speak up, esp when some of them are very invested in their
shady schemes. Certain elected officials either go out of their way to
avoid us, or make it a point to berate us for calling them out on their
foolishness (which is way too easy to do, but generally fun). Others
have become friends, which is interesting. The paper does, however,
like it as it gives them something interesting to print and occasionally
generates an ongoing letters-to-the-editor thread on the editorial
page. I give great quotes for articles and TV interviews, write LTEs
and op-eds, generally be a PITA.

My wife joined in 3 or 4 years ago with a really good LTE, and it got
her a reprimand at work from the head guy, first thing in the morning
even before she had seen the LTE (them good ol' boys have an early long
reach!) and 2 or 3 LTEs in response the next week or so, none of them
laudatory. At first she didn't even know what he was going on about,
and he wasn't too enthusiastic about it either but had to appease the
good ol' boys and report back she had been properly reprimanded. Her
boss liked it but told her to lay low for awhile... It was awesome,
it's great to cause headaches, dyspepsia, constipation, and high blood
pressure in the scalawags when they read the morning paper. I saw one
of them later, a state rep who had installed his brother (who owns a
Greek restaurant!) on the board of the place, and called him out on
that, he protested too much with much harrumphing and blathering, said
his brother knew about food service so could help the cafeteria
operations... I saw him a coupla weeks ago and was going to say hi but
he saw me coming and turned away. SCORE!!!

You know that old saying, when you throw a rock at a pack of dogs the
one that yelps is the one you hit...

When I was in 2nd grade, the principal (who I later learned to have been
a pedophile) called my mother for a conference and told her I was going
to be a JD (school lingo for juvenile delinquent) unless she got me
under control. Though I peaked early it did not manifest at that time
with the ladies. Later on in HS I was a honorrollee and marginal JD,
and it did not manifest much either with the ladies. Now I am an AD
according to some commentators, and the ladies love me but, alas, having
just one (well, two if you count my daughter) I am unable to capitalize
on that achievement! Old Benzes seem to have no effect on their
assessments.

Re: [MBZ] Wilton needs this for his new ride

2016-07-12 Thread Joel Cairo via Mercedes
I had this conversation with my son a coupla weeks ago as we were
passing a house with a "Box" with a blue metalflake paint job on blocks
out behind it, I had seen it there for quite some time with the big
chrome rims, etc. then recently on blocks. I supposed that the rim
store had come and repoed them when the guy couldn't keep up with
payments (you can get them on credit, just make a monthly payment, rent
to "own"). So I asked him why he thought this particular trend was
popular in a certain demographic, if it was a personal satisfaction
thing, to show off to his buddies, or to appear to be more attractive to
the ladies.

He believed quite sincerely that it was to be more attractive to the
ladies. A car with big rims was the key, not a job, education, nice
house, etc. I don't know but it sorta made sense, and he is probably
more in tune with it than I am.

Wow is right. Why would anyone spend that kind of money on rims which
require tires so thin they and the rim will be damaged going over common
bumps in the road?
