Re: [MBZ] engine search
The centering bore in the end of the crankshaft is larger in the '85 to match the larger centering nub in the torque converter, IIRC. Make that 617 turbo short blocks As far as I know, all the 917 turbo short blocks were the same with the exception of something on the flywheel of the 85 model. You could probably verify this using the online parts site. -Original Message- From: mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com [mailto:mercedes-boun...@okiebenz.com] On Behalf Of G Mann Sent: Wednesday, August 08, 2012 7:21 PM To: Mercedes Discussion List Subject: Re: [MBZ] engine search What physical difference is there between the sedan short block [crank, rods, pistons, block, cam chain drive/Injection pump drive] and the TD short block ? If they are both turbo. The difference is the wagon always has the SLS pump drive. The sedan almost always does not. > Assuming the head from your thrown rod engine can be returned > to service, seems to me, using the short block [lower end] > from a sedan version would widen the field quite a lot to find > a serviceable engine. That's how I would go about it. But then I do my my own wrenching so the only mechanic I have to satisfy is myself. *smiles* -- Philip ___ http://www.okiebenz.com For new and used parts go to www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

What physical difference is there between the sedan short block [crank, rods, pistons, block, cam chain drive/Injection pump drive] and the TD short block ? Other than the drive for leveling pump on the head aren't the bottom end of the engines the same? Assuming the head from your thrown rod engine can be returned to service, seems to me, using the short block [lower end] from a sedan version would widen the field quite a lot to find a serviceable engine. Re: My search for a 617.952 engine (not CA version) for my '85 300TD Anyone on our list have any experience(s) with Accurate Auto Parts in Monroe, LA? Note: I've realized one thing which may be making this search a problem, other than bein' on the lookout for the sleazeball scammers out there, if I've got my facts correct M-B imported the 300TD Turbodiesel in '84 & '85 to the USA and, according to the Nitske book, the production numbers for '84 were 4,739 and for '85 were 3,713 and I don't think all these were imported to the USA. so there probably aren't many examples available.
