My wife bought reader type safety glasses that she likes better than the regular readers. I'm old enough now I need readers to see what I'm doing. Though on that job, admittedly half of it was by feel. They aren't safety glasses, but they kept stuff from falling directly into my eyes. You may want to Deoxit the base the relay plugs into. We've been able to get it to start every time by pulling and re-seating the starter relay, so hoping that's the problem. I found a fuse diagram that says the starter relay fuse should be 15A, or 20A on 2007 and later models. Mine is a 2004 and it has a 20A fuse installed so I wonder if it has a history of blowing fuses. The relay is sold as a "Mercedes Multifunction Relay - Hella 0025421119" not specifically as a "Starter Relay" so I'm wondering if it's not quite up to the job and eventually the contacts degrade from trying to switch too much current. Anyway a new relay is in transit from FCP Euro so I hope that resolves the problem. If it does, I'll order another one to keep in the glove box. [MBZ] half the fleet has issues today
One of the drawbacks of owning older cars... but normally I have enough redundancy in the fleet to tolerate downtime on one or even two cars. Today I'm dealing with the intermittent start on the E500, a non-charging (probably bad alternator) on the Frontier, and the normally always-reliable W116 300SD had been sitting for a couple of weeks and this morning the throttle was sticking. Started it up and the revs started climbing and climbing. For a moment I thought it was somehow running away but it shut off with the key. I started working my way up the throttle mechanism from the pedal, lubricating everything I could find. I found the problem was the vertical pivot shaft on top of the valve cover. I guess with the extremely humid weather last week, and having been sitting for a while, it rusted enough to cause the whole mechanism to bind up. I cleaned it up with some emery cloth and lubed it up and all is good again. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
