Check out the Britain's Got Talent videos. In the same group as Susan Boyle (is
that right?) of recent fame. There
is a fellow who plays a soprano sax that is truly amazing.

Re: [MBZ] radio online

2009-04-21 Thread andrew strasfogel
Hey Wonko, we went to hear Polish pianist Krystian Zimerman at Strathmore
Hall outside D.C. on April 8, but he had taken ill and canceled that very
day. Last minute substitute was Marc-Andre Hamelin, a Canadian (Quebecer)
pianist I had never heard or heard of (and I am a real keyboard aficionado,
btw). When the announcement of the cancellation and substitution was made
onstage prior to the recital, someone booed loudly, despite the fact that
Hamelin is a highly regarded and well known musician who has performed
almost everywhere EXCEPT in the D.C. venues. M. Hamelin came out, sat down
at the keyboard, and performed an astoundingly beautiful and technically
brilliant recital of Schumann, Faure, and Debussy. During the quieter
passages of the Schumann Fantasy, you could hear a proverbial pin drop, so
rapt was the audience. The Debussy preludes were the most insightful and
vibrant interpretations I had ever heard of these works. I don't know if
his recordings capture these qualities, but you should definitely listen if
you can.

Hamelin is apparently the "go to" guy for last minute cancellations,
according to his NYC managers (who are friends of my brother). He also
plays jazz and composes. Quite the Renaissance man...

You can also try:

Radio Swiss Classic

No commercials. Announcements in German, French, or Italian.
Streaming content only.

Radio Suisse Romande Espace 2

Many types of programming (I listen to the 0600 - 0900 Sunday
morning programs. Announcements in French only (though I do not speak
French). Content is streamed AND archived for several weeks -- I
listen to Sunday morning's programs during the week at work. Baroque
liturgical music is my favorite. Each week I download the RealAudio
URL and copy and paste the program's content. They archive the
programs a few weeks beyond the calendar on their playlist page.

University of Oregon, KWAX, Eugene
http://www.kwax.com/programming.php
(KWAX is the sound a duck makes). My dad lived in Eugene. We listen
Sunday mornings to their program, "The Organ Loft." The organ is my
favorite instrument; J.S. Bach is my favorite composer.

There is also PopFind at http://www.popfind.com/ListenRadioStations.html.
It's a listing of the most popular Radio Stations on the Internet, of
