Our ballot is the same - and usually I vote to remove them, on the
general principle that it's someone elses turn. This year however,
those on the ballot had voted to give a convected felon ex-State
Senator a $6,000 per month retirement. I voted to remove them based on
that.

Happened here in WA four years ago. The challenger demanded recounts
until she won. Massive voting fraud with dead and criminals voting
multiple times for her. She got in by 120 votes from a few thousand

It will be a supreme cluster F--- for many of the tax levies and
initiatives out west. In WA I think there is a need to pass these
things by a percentage of the historical turn out of prior elections.
With 80% turn out the days of getting anything passed are gone, since

Today, one lady said, "you're the first one to thank us".

I think I'll have to start working the polls. In Michigan, all judicial
candidates are on a "non partisan" ballot in November, even though most of them
were nominated by political parties. For example, for the one open Supreme Court
seat, Taylor (inc) was nominated by the Rs, Hathaway is a D, and Roddis is an L,
but you won't find anything on the ballot but their names and the fact that
Taylor is incumbent. A woman walked up to a poll worker and whispered a question
in her ear. The poll worker answered loudly "If you vote a straight ticket, you
don't vote for anything else except the ballot proposals". I mentioned that I
believed the judicial choices were in the 'non-partisan' section of the ballot,
and the poll worker said she thought they were. As a result, the woman probably
didn't vote for any judicial candidates. (no great loss, everybody except Taylor
was running unopposed for re-election)

After seeing a poll worker A) give wrong voting instructions to a voter on a
very basic matter, and B) letting everybody in the room know that the voter in
question was voting a straight ticket, I realized that if I want to be part of
the solution I have to get off my duff and volunteer to work the polls in 2010.
It'll do me good to learn how to sit in a crowded room for an entire day without
voicing a single political opinion.

I was wondering that very thing this morning. MA has a fairly elegant system,
you apply to vote and on the application have to provide either the last 4
digits of your ssn or your driver's license number. When you vote you need id,
a drivers license or a utility bill or any number of other documents can
provide your id.
Then every year they send you a note that you need to send back basically to
prove you still live here and are still alive.

The problem is we went to vote today and nobody asked for id...

Who says I claimed that I was?

I'm simply making the statement of seemingly obvious fact that voting for
someone without bothering to look at his history, and compare what he's done
with what he said, detracts from the selection process rather than adding to it.

I'm not trying to take away the rights of uninformed idiots to vote, which seems
to be the words you want to put into my mouth, I'm just stating that I'd be far
happier if they stayed home and watched some more TV.

If only one person votes, and that person has bothered to learn what he's voting
for, that's far better than 1000 people going "eenie, miney, moe" before
coloring in the oval on the ballot.

Re: [MBZ] this is not about politics, its about voting

2008-11-04 Thread Bill R
Larry, let me jump in here with the only serious investigation I am aware of
about such things. IIRC 3 million votes in Ohio were checked and 7 possible
fraudulent ballots were found. You need to understand that the fraudulent
registrations seem to stem mostly from paying people otherwise out of work
to fill up registration sheets at so much $ per name. It is very rare that
anyone actually tries to vote with such a registration, and most of the fake
ones were caught by the agency turning them in, but even though they can and
did let the authorities know about the suspected fakes they are still bound
by law to turn them in. It is pretty much a paper tiger here, though
stories of some earlier days in Chicago and elsewhere do make one wonder.
Others might have a different take, and I am sure Donald is much more up on
this as well as the actual questions in your post.

Hi Donald -
Maybe you can help me understand something? Certain people are not
allowed to vote - felons, illegal aliens, under 18, dead people, etc. How
are those people weeded out of the voting process? I assume when someone
fills out the voter registration card they can lie about those things
designed to prevent them from voting, right?

When does that weeding process happen? What if a person were elected by

enough fraudulent votes -- would he be removed from office?

I don't. Too many people vote with too little thought. I wish 80% of them
would just stay home. Voting is not a duty, the duty is to make informed
choices when you choose to vote.

We sure agree on this one.

I was flummoxed how many people were voting this morning, our little elementary
school was packed.

Thank god for little old ladies eh? Who would run the polls without them?

I am having an election

In Indiana, you have to be registered, and you have to show a
government-issued photo ID at the polling site.

BTW I voted this morning, 10 minutes in and out. I vote straight ticket
so there's no agonizing over all the choices.

Re: [MBZ] this is not about politics, its about voting

2008-11-04 Thread Rolf
Its handled differently state by state. In '00 elections there was a
huge debacle in Florida, they let ChoicePoint handle the clearinghouse
and tens of thousands were removed based on very "loose" credentials,
people who had names similar to felons etc. I think it was something
like only 3% of those that were invalidated were actually invalid.
Weeding usually happens months before the election.

There would be a recount I would imagine.
