I use Bose noise-cancelling headphones in my 300SD when I'm on the 
highway. $300. Instant lexus. Also great music fidelity when you plug 
'em into anything that plays.

If I were going on a long road-trip, I would definitely do it...  That 
thing is loud on the highway...  But for regular every-day driving it's
not 
bad...  Once you get above about 50 MPH, the engine noise is quite 
significant, yes...  It's enough to bother me after 20 or 30 minutes -- 
which is why I avoid taking it on the highway whenever possible...

I've 
found that those cheap foam ear-plugs are just fine for me...  You can
get 
a package of 20 of them for less than $5.00  I use them when I go
shooting, 
flying, or just about any time when I'm going to be around lout
equipment 
for a long time -- work like a charm, and you never notice they're in
there 
once you get them "seated" properly...
