Tensioner is not something you take apart as it is under spring
pressure. you replace the unit. I have only seen leaks at the oring
seal to the head. I can't remember the 616 style, but I think it is
the same as older types that is held in with two bolts, one also
being half on the exh manifold. OM60x is screw-in style. You
remember which it is I am sure. 616 has been so reliable, I only
ever had one apart, and that was years ago.
OM621 also has a U shaped banjo fitting tube that runs from the
front of the head to the front of the block. It is an oil supply. I
have been guilty of forgetting to tighten those banjo fittings,
leading oil leaks.
Ahhh, so close to getting my '78 240D back into usable trim. Took it
for a 10 mile ride today and everything was fine except a lingering
scent of burning oil. I figured I'd spilled a little when I changed
it the other day but the smell just wouldn't quit. When I got home I
had oil dripping off the engine under the passenger's side motor
mount. I pulled the air cleaner assembly and ran the engine a
little. It looks like the oil is coming from above the alternator,
at least I can see it dripping onto the alternator bracket.
Its not the valve cover gasket thats dry all the way around.
After additional examination I think the leak is coming from the
timing chain tensioner, looks like the head of the tensioner bolt
has an aluminum gasket of some sort. We didn't replace that although
we did put a new gasket on its base. Is that something we should
have done? Looks like I need to pull it back apart (which involves
shifting the AC compressor *sigh*) and give it a look. I do have an
assortment of washers and gaskets and do-dads we didn't use when
changing the head gasket.
