My Indy advised against buying an early 129, as there were many updates made
throughout the line through the mid 90's, and the earlier parts are not
available. You will be forced to buy the upgraded parts at a considerable
expense over the original parts as designed. He recommended buying a later
version, or if an earlier version, on on which the parts had already been
upgraded.

Correct. And from 1998-up, the SL320 was not sold in the USA, only the
SL500 and SL600. Overseas, the SL320 from approx 1999-up did indeed
get the M112 6-cyl, but that was never sold in the USA.

The M104 engine in the SL320 is a DOHC, inline-6, 24-valve engine. The
 90-93 300SL got the M104.981 engine.

The 320 6 cyl engines has ooodles of power in an E class for getting around.
Under pwered for the SL. Deb constantly drives the 1995 E320 wagon with the
104.992 engine like it's a NASCAR event. Car performs well. Took away her
driving priveledges in our 500SL.

Our 1991 500SL has good balance to power. If possible try to get the 1996
and later years that has ODB2. The stealership employees are becoming less
and less able and capable to work on the ODB1 systems reliably.

Stay away from the 600SL series unless you have deep pockets and a high
tolerance for pain.

And don't get me started on the 2000-2002 S-Class with cylinder shutoff.
Biodegradeable wiring is a blessing compared to these.

The SL320 / 300SL will have the M104 engine... nice motor, it has the
usual issues with head gaskets like most of the M104's, don't think
there's anything else major to worry about. The SL500 / 500SL will
have the M119 engine, which is a real powerhouse... no major problems
there, but usually due for a timing chain & rails by 150k (and it's
not as easy or cheap to do as our old diesels). The M119 is a fairly
expensive engine to maintain, though... not that the M104 is cheap,
but the M119 is a notch above. The 500SL had mechanical (KE?)
injection from 90-92 and then bumped up to the electronic LH injection
starting in 1993, IIRC.

If your wife doesn't care about power (and you don't either), I'd
stick with the SL320. If one of you wants a *fast* car, get the SL500.
Drive both and let us know how you like them! I'd love a late R129
SL500 'Silver Arrow' edition with the AMG Sport package. Mmmm.

I had a 1995 SL320 and subsequently a 1997 SL500. The eight cylinder gets
slightly better gas mileage. The V8 car gets 18mpg city and 25mpg highway.

In the process of looking at one time I drove a manual SL300. I felt it was
a little doggy; but then I didn't have enough time with it to really get
used to the car.
