Re: [MBZ] Auctions - Was "This is Sort of Cool"

2024-06-27 Thread dan penoff.com via Mercedes
Good to know, Kevin, thanks!

I used to stay at a hotel in the Ginza, which if you’re not familiar with
Tokyo, is a large business and entertainment district near downtown. There were
loads of pachinko “parlors” and karaoke bars, very popular with businessmen.
Pachislo games had not been developed yet at that time, so I’ve never see one
in the “wild."

And yes, they are very noisy, which seems to be the preference. Lights, noises,
etc., all seem to be a big attraction in that culture.

I found it amusing that one of the biggest issues I saw when researching the
Pachislo games was how to lower the volume on them. A lot of people not
familiar with how these were originally used don’t understand that the noise
levels in these places can be deafening, so the only way to stand out to get
played is to be the loudest one on the block, so to speak.

I need to go out and change the odds on mine, as it’s presently set at the
lowest setting, which is about an 80% payout, I think. The most liberal setting
is around 110%-115% payout.

The machine I have is a Yamasa, who seems to be one of the more popular
manufacturers. There is still little on these that goes into any detail on the
Web. I’ve found a forum that covers them, but again, not a lot of information
there.

Nice find!! Pachislo and Pachinko machines are a lot of fun! A few years ago, I
was really into the older, all mechanical, Pachinko machines. At one point, I
had six plus two more that had the electronic ball launchers. I had one Sankyo,
and all the rest were Nishijin machines. A couple of them going at once
generates quite a cacophony! I’m down to one 1972 Nishijin model A recycler.
They are referred to as recyclers since they have a ball tray in the middle
where all launched balls go, and when there’s a payoff, you get them back in
your tray to launch again. There’s a top ball tray to feed more balls when this
tray runs low, and an overflow bin at the bottom when the middle tray is full.
Most of the time, it takes quite a while to require lifting balls from the
bottom to refill the top tray, so the middle tray gets recycled over and over.
There are no electronics in this machine, and like a Mercedes Diesel,
maintenance will keep it going forever.

Just been playing it and having fun for now.

There was a listing for a Japanese “Pachislo” machine that had been around for
some time with a price of $95. These are electronic slot machines without the
arm, and what came after Pachinko sort of fell out of favor - mainly because
these machines could give you a seizure with all the stuff going on, much like
a Japanese vending machine, if you’ve ever seen one.

Anyway, I see it’s still there, so I reach out to her and ask her what her
bottom dollar is, and that I'm a pinball guy but mildly interested.

She messages me back and says she’ll take $25 for it. I asked when I could come
get it. She was out in the boondocks east of town, but it was a nice drive and
good way to see some scenery. She had a big place with a lot of dogs. Showed it
to me, I looked it over, gave her the $25 and we loaded it up in the ML550.

Got it home, did a factory reset on it, and it’s working like it’s brand new
once again. Now if I could only find a way to interpret all of the Japanese
that’s on it…

It did happen, here is a picture:
