Re: [MBZ] Does concentrated coolant have a shelf life?
With the cost of a trip to Dr. these days... you would be money ahead to just buy all new and call it good.. that test strip will likely cost you $200... Thanks for the PH test strip tip btw. lots more WalGreens than NAPA stores around. Re: [MBZ] Does concentrated coolant have a shelf life?
It measures the acidity/alkalinity of solutions. Dip the disposable paper test strip in a solution and then compare it to a color scale. Cheapest is Walmart at about $5.00. (Some Walmart stores don't have them but Walmart mailorder does.) Widely used for numerous applications; many manufacturers make them. As long as the Ph is between 7 and 11, the antifreeze is okay. If you have a regular doctor, his nurse might be willing to test your antifreeze for Ph with a strip that's used for urine. There are special strips for different types of antifreeze which measure additional characteristics but they are more expensive and probably not needed for our purposes. (Available at big truck/big equipment dealers and some at NAPA.) Gerry Gerry wrote: tested the ph with a urine ph test strip (ph was 9 or 10)... Re: [MBZ] Does concentrated coolant have a shelf life?
I had the same situation. Couldn't find info on the web other than buying HOAT (GO-5) test strips from NAPA or truck dealers (somewhat expensive), so I shook up the jug, mixed a little 50-50 with distilled water in a glass, looked for cloudiness, tested the ph with a urine ph test strip (ph was 9 or 10), and put the AF in the car. was still okay after about 30K miles when hoses were replaced. No sign of corrosion and Ph was still above 7. Rule of thumb is Ph 7 to 11 is okay; 9 to 10.5 is ideal. Drug and big box stores have Ph test strips for about five dollars up (five dollars at Walmart). I don't think you can use "green AF" test strips for HOAT AF. Gerry From: "Allan Streib" I have a couple of jugs of undiluted genuine MB coolant, but they are at least 5, maybe close to 10 years old. Any reason not to use it?
