Walmart has 0w40 for $6.48, which seems expensive until you realize it's cheaper 
than a gallon of 5W40 for $26.48.

Thanks for the link, it looks like the 5W-40 has 10% more anti wear 
additives than the 0W-40. 15W-50 is the leader, if you've got an old 
Benz like a OM617 or M103.

Thanks for the link, it looks like the 5W-40 has 10% more anti wear additives 
than the 0W-40. 15W-50 is the leader, if you've got an old Benz like a OM617 or 
M103.

Ach, I just looked at that chart; it used to have a "formula M" that was NOT 
"ESP", which had a higher phosphorus and higher zinc (it looked the same as the 
turbo diesel truck).  

There doesn't appear to be a difference in zinc and phosphorus levels with the 
ESP stuff.

The count goes down in increments of 100 (only), at a rate not readily 
relatable to actual miles driven; theres an oil quality sensor in gassers that 
provides input and the cluster also looks at RPM and mph among other things. 
With extensive highway driving you may find that it takes 18,000mi to go to 0. 
A normal mix takes about 12-15k mi to go down.

That's why it's important to use factory spec oil, and the proper M1 has a much 
higher amount of ZDDP than normal M1. There used to be charts of it.

The turbo diesel truck is pretty close to the formula M tho.

You must follow the directions exactly for the procedure to work, although the 
manual does not specify that all doors must be closed, an open door will 
prevent the reset. (don't ask how I know!)

The owner's manual is jout in the car and it was complicated.

I think the important step was holding button zero on the cluster for several 
seconds and then turning the ignition on while still holding the button. I'll 
try to remember to look it up tonight.


BTW, I drove it 19 miles yesterday and still have 10,000 left. What increments 
does the display count down in? Is it really flexible as to how the car is used, 
or does it just count the miles?

It's so far back, it's difficult getting to the filter without running
into the rubber seal for the rear of the hood.
