Re: [MBZ] El Capitan now whatever 10.6 was called
iMac tend to collect kruft that reduces cooling and leads to operational failures. I have acquired and revived a few by careful application of canned air after removing the coverings. The same overheat failures plague the laptops. To clear up drive issues, fully clean the guts of the iMac, then I would use the install disk to boot to disk utility. Repair permissions and check the surface. If that does not return errors, you can Carbon Copy clone the drive to the SSD or 4 Tb drive clay On Nov 11, 2015, at 7:54 AM, Rich Thomas via Mercedes wrote: > OK I got the SSD and replacement HD for my iMac, which I have been putting > off installing for a few days but I need to do that. OS X is still UNIX, in fact one of the few fully licensed UNIX still in the marketplace, and free as long as it is on Apple hardware. Getting into the DeLorean a bit here, but I remember licensing costs from AT over SysV UNIX. When Sun Microsystems was SUN and SGI had IRIX and the cheapest UNIX workstation was more than a new Mercedes E class. But I digress. OS X has put some roadblocks in place, as has been mentioned, for the "grandma crowd" however, anyone with UNIX background can easily circumvent and disable these. Too easily, in fact, for a long time there was a bug that allowed unsigned code to forcibly enable full no password sudo rights for any account, including guest, and then install whatever they wanted as UID 0. Kept that very quiet, they did. Re: [MBZ] El Capitan now whatever 10.6 was called
OK I got the SSD and replacement HD for my iMac, which I have been putting off installing for a few days but I need to do that. I want to put the OS (which will be 10.6.something as I have some apps that don't work with the later versions) on the SSD and then restore or transfer everything off the (possibly failing/overheating) original HD. I have a Time Machine backup drive. I have the original OS install DVD and a pointer to the updates (10.6.8?) so I can get that sorted out OK on the SSD. Any y'all have some detailed instructions on how to do the app/data transfer and set it up to boot off the SSD and see all the other stuff on the new HD? I found a few instructions on how to sorta do that but they did not entirely address my concerns and still seemed a bit vague. I think DPPoos had some instructions for when he did it? I am thinking that the overheating on the HD might be due to some schmutz in there clogging things up, so I will do a thorough cleaning too and then put the original HD in an external case so I will probably be able to pull stuff directly off it though I will also have the TM bkup. I got a new 4TB drive, wasn't that much more than a 1 or 2, and HGST Deskstar which seem to be the highest-rated HDs. --R On 11/11/15 10:42 AM, Jim Cathey via Mercedes wrote: What kind of ‘book? Re: [MBZ] El Capitan now whatever 10.6 was called
iMacs are really intolerant of high temperatures. I swapped a hard drive in a 20" C2D iMac I had and the temperatures killed the new drive in a week. Your SSD should be fine. Load the OS to the SSD with the optical media. Apply whatever updates are necessary to get it as current (for that OS) as possible. Be absolutely sure you use the same naming convention for the machine and your account(s) in the new install. If you don't, you will have home folder and permission problems with stuff you restore from TimeMachine. If you want to avoid these potential issues, boot off the OS optical media and restore the old OS to the SSD. It's not as clean, but it will take you back to exactly where you were with your last backup. They dumped classic icons and went South Beach, flat pastel cartoon. Looks like something from Toontown for Miami Hotwives. The install was very simple. Took forever for the download, but I had the install screen there when I woke up. Poke the install button and away it went. The whole feel is simplistic and very one button. The same look and feel interface as with the iPhones and iPads for configuration, as well as execution. It also hooks deeply into iCloud and synching all your Apple products together. I tried to migrate stuff over and update the OS. Update just locked it up, as it had done on my other macbooks. It would not allow me to install 10.7 from DVD, but manual update got to 10.6.8 so the DVD did work. Auto update on 10.7 farted and locked. It did not want to behave, so I just went with El Capitan. Took all night to install. This thing is ugly. Like ios. Or winblows. All flat and pastel. No lock up so far. clay >>> >>> What is ugly? the install or the GUI? >>> What is like ios? >>> >>> ___ >>> http://www.okiebenz.com >>> >>> To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ >>> >>> To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: >>> http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com >>> >> >> >> ___ >> http://www.okiebenz.com >> >> To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ >> >> To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: >> http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com >> > > > ___ > http://www.okiebenz.com > > To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ > > To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: > http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com > ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
Re: [MBZ] El Capitan
This thing is ugly. Like ios. Or winblows. All flat and pastel. So I think of the Yosemite that's on my wife's 'book. Ugly. Works well, though, but slow. Cured the infuriating wifi problems we were having with 10.5, 10.6. Could use an SSD, but RAM is maxed at 4GB. It wants more. You probably need a lot more. I'm sending this from my machine that's running 10.2.8, controlled (via Chicken of the VNC) from a G5Q that's running 10.5.8. -- Jim ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com

What kind of ‘book? My secondary machine is a late 2008 Unibody MacBook Pro 13” C2D with 8GB of RAM and an SSD. It works quite well under El Capitan. Terminal is still there, and the underlying OS kernel is still readily accessible for those who wish to tinker or modify. Terminal is still there, and the underlying OS kernel is still readily accessible for those who wish to tinker or modify. Dan TO get the free download can you download and not install, or does it install on the machine you download from? I'd like to get the copy, but I don't want to risk bricking an older machine if it goes south. I want to sit on it a while to do more research on performance with old intel machines. ___ http://www.okiebenz.com To search list archives http://www.okiebenz.com/archive/ To Unsubscribe or change delivery options go to: http://mail.okiebenz.com/mailman/listinfo/mercedes_okiebenz.com
