I've seen the same thing. Amazon established a reputation for having the
best price on almost anything, so now people just go there without
shopping around at all. Sometimes they still do have good prices, but
certainly not always.

Sometimes a silly difference between Amazon.com and Amazon.ca too.

I was looking for suspension springs for a Maytag washing machine
recently. Several vendors in the US offering from about $12 to $50 for
the set of something like 5 springs.

Only one offering them on Amazon.ca in Canada for $173. Silly
difference. I am going to contact a local appliance parts place to see
how much as our washer is vibrating quite badly when it spins and that
is said to usually be the problem.

So I got that email saying the oil would be available like next week or
something, and in looking at my bank account I see that the charge is
still pending a week later, it has not been processed yet.  I'm
wondering if they just placed a hold for the amount, and at some point
will charge or not charge me depending on whether I pick it up (which I
won't because I am not there anymore).  So I guess I get 2 jugs of oel
free?  I'm sure there would be no way to actually pay since I did get an
email receipt, and the woman at EMdW told me I was good to go even
though I had picked it myself.  This probably falls into some sort of
electronic hell where no one would know how to actually sort it out
since I circumvented the procedure, with permission by an agent of the
Corporation.

Re: [MBZ] El Mercado de Wal oel

2019-12-04 Thread Dan Penoff via Mercedes
Yeah, the Business membership if you’re not using their branded credit card is
rarely a good deal for the average consumer. We got talked into it a few years
ago and ended up changing back to a regular membership. In fairness to Costco
they did refund the difference back to us when we renewed at the lower level.
They claim you’ll come out ahead on the business membership, but at the time
they didn't give credit for gasoline purchases, and that was the dealbreaker
for us. Without that gas money counting towards our annual vig, it didn’t work
out.

Costco is like a lot of retailers, where if you expect to get ahead you’ve got
to really do your due diligence. This is something Mitch excels at due to his
beancounter mindset (no diss there, consider it a compliment!) There have been
some consumer web sites that have done comparison shopping and found that with
some products it’s actually cheaper to buy it elsewhere. I think toilet paper
was one of the items. That being said, the Kirkland branded stuff is very good
and rarely disappoints while being very cost effective over other brands. I
bought some Kirkland cashews and pistachios today, and the price for both was
nowhere near when they cost elsewhere in smaller quantities.

In that same vein, I’ve found that meat is rarely a bargain at Costco. We have
a local farmer’s market that supplies most of the major restaurants in the
area, and I go there for meat. For $100 I can walk out with a couple of whole
beef tenderloins and a pork tenderloin that would cost me twice that at Costco
or a local grocer. They also have a selection of produce that would make your
eyes water.

Re: [MBZ] El Mercado de Wal oel

2019-12-04 Thread Mitch Haley via Mercedes
Most of it's at a good, but not fantastic price.
This week I saved about $3 on 2 kilos of chocolate chips, $2 on a 3lb pack of
bacon, $3 on a 50pk of instant cocoa, and $30 on 3 big bags of grain free dog
food. And I saved $0.70 on 7 gallons of gas.
I heard great things about Kirkland bacon, but it's no better than Wright's,
and last week's sale on Wright's was very near Costco pricing. If I hadn't
stocked up on olive oil last month I could have saved another $10. And yeast is
about half what I normally pay.

But I had to drive 80 miles round trip, and the freeway is on the opposite side
of town from Costo so I have to drive through E. Lansing to get there. Sam's
Club is right by the freeway, and there's a Sam's in Battle Creek which is only
52 miles round trip.

The dog food is made by Diamond, like Taste of the Wild, but it has less meat
than TOTW. Even allowing for the quality difference, I figure a 35lb bag is $10
better than I can do elsewhere. If it weren't for the dog food it wouldn't be
worth the trip at all. All that changes if a warehouse is conveniently located
for you.
I do wish I knew about the Groupon deal for a Costco membership when we were
talking about Costco glasses a couple months ago. A set of eyeglasses could pay
for the membership.

And yes, Mitch, no tyres or batteries if you’re not a member.

Here in the States they have a branded VISA credit card that we use for all of

Why don't you just join Costco? I don't know what they offer in the USA
but here in Canada, if you buy the "Executive" membership, you get a
percentage of every dollar spent back. It has always covered our cost of
renewal. My good wife renewed this morning and paid the annual fee and
got $50 or more in cash back as well from the cheque they had sent us.
She buys things like paper towel and TP there as well as many other
