Loren,

Thanks, I will check the key on the timing advance shaft. I suspect it's
gone.

  Thanks

Some after market impellers are stamped steel - I have one on my
garage floor - replaced by an OEM type from Rusty. A weak fan clutch
can do tha same thing - forward motion of the car produces air flow -
none at a stop.

Yes, there is a key on the injection timer shaft.

Peter, the sleeve is in place on the splined shaft in the engine, and in fact I
can turn it with a pair of pliers without moving the crank.

Might there be a woodruff key on the shaft that could have sheared?

I tried to make this link all one piece, but not sure if I did it
right. Anyone, the hardest part of this is going to be getting the
elephant to back up to the filler nozzle, I think.

Re: [MBZ] Engine Trouble?

2007-04-18 Thread Loren Faeth
Someone a couple of years ago had left the IP timing pin in and
turned the engine over, shearing a pin or key somewhere.

there is a key on the shaft that the timing advance rides on. The
outside of the advance is the sprocket the timing chain runs on. The
back side of the shaft drives the ip.

Something's not right. If you had it far enough apart to
swap pumps you should have seen the sheared spline (or
whatever). Could the timer have come apart internally?

Did you transfer the drive sleeve from the old pump to the new one?
There is a splined sleeve between the IP and the injection timer on the
615 chassis, and it may stick to either spot coming out.

If it's not in there, the IP is not, in fact, connected to anything and
will not turn with the chain.

I was surprised to find that I could spin the crank even though the IP
was locked with the locking pin.

That test may indeed show something that's broken, or it may cause
something to break. I'd be really leery of using the IP to keep the
crank

from turning.
