I saw that diagnosis on a website somewhere, once, for GM car...it stuck in my mind mostly because it seemed like kind of a poor design. If the bulb is burned out, the alternator doesn't work, but you don't know it's not working because the bulb can't light up. ;) It's the simplest (and cheapest) way to do it, though, so it turns out most cars are wired that way.
Re: [MBZ] Field Coil Power
It worked! I replaced the bulb and now the alternator is generating current. David, you are a scholar and and a gentleman! Is this a great list or what? David is correct, power for excitation comes through and is limited by the alternator light filament. Jim Friesen Phoenix AZ 79 300SD, 261 K miles 98 ML 320, 138 K miles
Re: [MBZ] Field Coil Power
Thanks David. The alternator light is dead. I will try another bulb in case that is the problem. B Dike wrote: I tried another alternator for the 77 240D and it doesn't generate current either. There is no magnetic effect around the alternater when the car is running making me suspicious that there may not be power to the field coils. The two big wires have 12V but the small blue wire is dead. Does your alternator light come on when you turn the key on? I don't know if Mercedeses are wired this way, but on many cars, if the alternator light is burned out or there's another break in its circuit, the alternator field will NOT energize.
