Heh, thats cheatin. I never used to use the block heater above freezing. 
Neither of my VWs has a block heater or shows any sign of needing one. 
Supposedly the '99 and later TDIs don't have freeze plugs so theres no where to 
even put a block heater. Instead folks install a "Frost Heater" which is an 
inline coolant heater. 1500w so it really pumps some heat out. They say its 
great because you get instant cabin heat for a few seconds until the coolant 
really starts to circulate.
The TDI guys are super paranoid about not starting in the cold, they'll run a 
frost heater at 0C "just in case". My '98 Jetta started fine at -16F which is 
the coldest we've had since I got it. Supposed to be -13F tonight, we might try 
making a cold start video tomorrow.

I use the block heater below 40 degrees, set on a timer.  Car fires fine 
without it, but I get a smoother idle and heat very quickly.  Timer turns on 
the block heater about an hour before I leave.

4 guys, they switched drivers at every gas stop.

Theres an idea that cold winters limit ticks. We had a series of warm winters 
before the last 2 years and the ticks were really bad. Even last winter while 
it was generally cold never got to double digits below zero fahrenheit that 
would really do the job. We're supposed to hit -13F this week which I'm hoping 
will really knock 'em back.
I'm a corporate instructor, I teach the Avid ISIS (Infinitely Scaleable 
Intelligent Storage) products:

Which is basically big (maxes out at 3PB) hard drive arrays used for video and 
film production.

The Iditarod race is having big issues due to the lack of snow for the race.  
Normally starts in Anchorage, but no snow there, so they have to move the start 
to Fairbanks.   There has been a bit of a drought, and when there is precip, it 
is too warm to make that be snow.  El Nino is making PNW rather warm and wet, 
but at least there is decent snow pack to reduce fire hazard this summer.

are gonna be bad this summer since we haven't hardly had a good 
freeze at all. This morning I looked at the weather and it looks as 
though we're headed into that freeze after all.
When I started class today at noon it was 26, by the time I got done 
at 4pm it was 16, now its 6. National Weather Service says a low of 
-2 tonight. Looking at a low of -13 Saturday night and a HIGH of 7 
of Sunday. That'll freeze the lakes up, at least maybe we'll be able 
to go ice fishing which we haven't hardly been able to do, or 
snowmobile some on the lakes. No snow for riding the trails, the 
snowmobile guys are crying so bad its amazing anybody can sleep at 
night.

70 today and tomorrow

Benzin at 1.35
Diesel at 1.50 to 1.59 mostly, some up to 2.499!!

Drained the TC on the POSitive and added trans fluid.  It has a nice 
clean shiny Mann transmission filter now, so it should be good for 15 
to 30k miles.  Checked out the front end on Arkie.  It is still nice 
and tight, but I will check the RF wheel bearing looseness.


Arkie needs a good Martha job.

Great it over to me and I'll do it. We can put you up and the wife is always 
looking for someone to cook for. I've gotten into the habit of eating a big 
lunch, so we rarely eat dinner any more. If I have Thai or Italian for lunch, 
I'm not hungry again until 7-8, if that.

Got close to 70 today, but dropping into the 40s at night. Frost to the north 
of us, up by Gerry.
