they wanted way too much for it."

Yeah, like yours...

I have no particular interest in it other than it might be a source for
some bits of this and that, esp if the tranny is shot.  I might keep in
touch with him, it is about an hour or more away, so no real interest to
drive up there.  For $300 it could offer up some good parts I guess.
Strip it down, sell the hulk to the knacker.  It's curious why the
interior is so beat at only 138kmi, maybe he or a PO had dogs or something.

A tranny at the knacker is $300 (or $350, I forget, doesn't matter) so
the vehicle is not worth much if you'd have to put that money and time
and effort into it, you'd still have a beater.  I guess right now it is
just a yard ornament, his wife is probably riding him...

Sounds like a torque converter is somehow munched. Never seen inside
of one of these, is there anything else it could be? I'm not sure what
linkage would be in there, maybe some kind of sprags that let go?

It could also be the flex plate ...

Yes, you are correct. I'm still recovering from having a colonoscopy

Isn't that the engine that munches timing chain adjusters/tensioners?

Agreed. This is a whole lot of hurt, even if it’s just the transmission. You’ve
got a transfer case to deal with as well. Add to that the body and interior
issues and it’s a parts car. Heck, stuff like the headlight washers aren’t even
there because someone was too lazy to replace or install them with the new
bumper cover.

I see little to no value here unless you had another you wanted parts for. Add
to this that the owner has an Audi, which tells you a lot right there.

More likely a trashed gear set. Torque converter would rattle any time the
engine is turning. Ditto for the front pump.
