 Normal = pressed cap
This engine is for the South African market so I guess they decided a
 block
heater is not required even though it can get to -12 deg here in winter

So, the real question is whether or not your cap was pressed
into a threaded hole or not. Kinda suck to chisel that thing
out of there only to find you couldn't screw in a block heater.

What is 'normal'? A pressed-in cap? My engine has three threaded
plugs, only one of which was removed to install the block heater.
As I doubt that they intended to mount more than one, I wonder why
this engine was built without two 'normal' plugs. Could yours have
been a license-built motor, thus explaining the difference? Seems
that the 'normal' plug seen here is a 19mm allen threaded plug.

If a block heater isn't in the cards, you could always go with
the inline type. They work, too. Just not quite as well, nor
 as elegantly.

-10C? Thats 12F which is cool but not particularly cold. My '83 240D used to
start pretty good down to 0F at which point it'd begin to get ornery.

No idea how well it'd start cold now that the glow plug light doesn't come on.
Still hoping its just the light, I put glow plugs (okay I put 3 glow plugs in,
my Indy did the 4th) in 2004...

Have you tried looking in a local car parts store for a block heater
that fits in a freeze plug hole? That might be the way to go. Should
cost less that the Mercedes version and if there are no threads in the
hole when you take the plug out no big deal. If there are threads still
no big deal.

No, all the blocks are the same. The ones that have no block heater from
the factory have a large threaded plug (with a 19 mm hex hole in the
center) placed where the block heater goes. Take it out with an allen
wrench and extension and put the block heater in.

I don't recall exactly what the picture you posted earlier of a block
heater looks like, but I think it was of the wrong thing.

Attached is a picture of the block heater I installed in our OM617. It's a
rather difficult job with the engine in the car (I did it on a '72 220D/8,
OM615). I did this one before I installed the engine in our W123, changing
it from a 240D to a 300D.

Loosely speaking, down by the starter. There is a threaded plug in the hole
if there is no heater in it. I believe it requires a 19mm hex bit on a
three meter long handle to remove. (very hard to turn)

Re: [MBZ] Looking for 220V Om617 block heater

2008-05-30 Thread Rich Thomas
He can get 2 for $100, still a lot cheaper than the local thieves
(seller and tax man) and wire them up in series, and use one to heat the
car interior, put it in a can of antifreeze, get that toasty warm. You
guys need some engineers to help you out.

Or, is that 220V there on 2 110V legs or is one leg 220V? If two legs,
then make a plug with one leg at 110V. Or does it not work that way? I
know in my electrical box I have two legs, each puts out 110V to
neutral, and if I wire leg-leg I get 220V to run stove, drier,
compressor, etc.

The modern world has an entirely different definition of a

Ah, but the block heater is not just so that the vehicle will start. It helps
the engine warm up faster and
therefore produce heat sooner. It also helps the engine on cold start so that
it should last longer.

Use Mobile 1 and a block heater in winter, and your trusty MB will indeed last
foreever.

Now that you mention it - my first MB, a '70 220D, had a heater in the
heater hose - so you turned cabin heat on full, opened both the floor
and defroster vents, plugged it in at night. The windshield would be
mostly clear when all others in the neighborhood were frosted over.
The factory block heaters in the subsequent MBs never cleared the
windshield quite as well.

That looks like it to me. Don't know why I don't see a heater loop sticking
out of it. The threads are way bigger than 14mm. I may have guessed wrong
on the size of the internal hex on the plug, it could be 14mm instead
of the 19mm-3/4 that I thought.

It's 19mm (or 3/4) on the ones I've done. There are 2-3 of
