Thats what I am wanting to know. I have seen these deals on ebay complete with laptop etc for 4k or more. Re: [MBZ] Manuals for 1990 300 SL??
I do all my own work on our cars, even after my back operation. Our 1991 500SL is easier to work on than our 1992 600SEL. Our 500SL doesn't have traction control (ASR) which is perfect for that chassis. On the 500SL the major problems are the oil tubes in the engine, hydraulic latches in the A pillar fot the convertible top and the wiring harness's. The 500SL is a piece of cake to work on compared to the 600SEL. So I guess it's all relative. To work on either buy the Dvd from the dealer for that particular chassis, a decent set of tools and a code scanner. Both our cars are ODB1 so I had a Snap On 2500 scanner, sold it when I got the Mercedes DAS software for a spare laptop. You can pull the same codes with a Led light and some wires it's just that I suck at counting led flashes, pretty good at reading GUI interfaces. ;) The Dvd is a digital copy of the paper manuals. I usually pull up whatever I'm working on, print it out and head outside with the printed instructions and picture of what I'm working on. Yeah somehow folks just don't want 20 year old warranty information although the OnTrack stuff is pretty cool. It does direct comparisons with Mercedes and all other competing makes. Much of what I see available out there in the aftermarket type manuals appears to be for the newer models only. What is my best bet on the older model? Start here: http://mb.braingears.com/114_115_Disk1/program/matrix6.htm It's sometimes slow and sometimes down, but the price is right! I expect you could download it from THERE but I've never tried. Re: [MBZ] Manuals?
I'm still using Explorer. Have tried it from home and office and no luck either way. I get through the initial screens but once I get deep enough to get detail, it says no page available in some spots - like the maintenance part that deals with oil changes - as I try to answer my own question about which side of the nylon filter disk is up. Bingo! Page 18 shows the filter screen and the orientation. It was in correctly with the raised part facing upwards toward the engine and I will install it againn in that manner. Thank you for the info. I also am a book junkie. I am a technical writer with a degree in Professional Writing (Yes, they have those). You are absolutely correct in that folks have no appreciation of the work that goes into writing a technical manual. I estimate that each Haynes manual costs approximately $250,000.00 to produce, if not more. Thomas E. I also bout Why Does My Diesel Smoke and Why does My Diesel Rattle and Knock. They are not cheap, but being in publishing I know how much time goes into a a book and his market can't be that big, so the price has to be high to make it worth his while. His writing style is great and I did not mind forking the money over. Christopher
