Re: [MBZ] Musical stuck calipers?

2018-02-18 Thread Max Dillon via Mercedes
That happened to me once with a drum brake, on SWMBO's Fiat that had been
sitting for a year or two. Stuck on, smoking hot, pulled over, backed up a bit
and hit the brake pedal hard, brake released and I had no more trouble.

Sounds like a hose to me. If you applied lots of brake pressure
during the drive out it could have squeezed passed the swelled
hose resulting in the brake getting stuck on. By the time you
drove home, the pressure bled off - and if you didn't use lots of
brake pressure during the drive home it could have stayed off.

Bleed the brakes. If one doesn't bleed easily, then the hose is
bad.

Perhaps "Smokin; Hot" (a term generally reserved to female Homo
sapiens) broke the rust loose. So now the caliper works?

Well got done with dinner and headed home. It was dark and I then
discovered I had no dash lights. I guess I get to pull the cluster
tomorrow and fix the pot. I also had no tag lights so I stopped at
wally world to buy some Dot 4 and some new bulbs. Fixed the tag lights
in the parking lot. Never had a brake issue on the way home. I
figured it would have heated up about the time I got home like it did
earlier when I got to the red lobster. In fact, the LF wheel was not
even warm at all were as before it was smoking hot. I checked the
other wheels and the LR wheel felt warm where as the RR did not, and
none of the other wheels did. What is up with that? Why would that
one caliper seem to lock up so bad it starts smoking, then later does
not? Is it possible the brake fluid change will fix this? I would
think if a caliper was going to lock up it would not later be fine.
