Watch out, Max, yours is next. Indy has three 606 engines that have the same
issue this week. Two of mine were welded/carboned in. He was going to have to
remove the head to get them out, but given that it would triple the repair
bill, he spent four hours slowly torquing on them to get them out. The other
two E300D were newer and not as lucky. They have heads at the machine shop
getting rebuilt. This is a know issue with that engine. Just a matter of
time. I have already had the head of this car to gain access to stuck GP.
Twice in 10 years dealing with them is a pain.

It is all a bucket of wheat paste!

Some do gooder decided to waste time and measured the particulate production of
cooking a burger on the grill. Flame broiled burger emits as much particulate
matter as the exhaust of an 18 wheeler traversing 40 miles of flat land. Now
we can no longer have outdoor cook outs, because filling the grill will account
for the same pollution as driving a truck 320 miles.

Re: [MBZ] Nasty diesel

2013-01-27 Thread Peter Frederick
Soot is indeed a huge problem. It doesn't stay suspended for very
long, so the effect isn't like CO2 or methane, but it DOES have a huge
impact on the melting of glaciers and ice fields.

The vast majority has been produced by diesel engines -- the soot from
forest fires, on top of being much less total than from engines,
doesn't disperse in the same way since it's not the relatively pure,
super fine carbon emitted by diesels.

Automotive and any truck engine produced after 1995 diesels are not
the problem -- the great majority of the soot is emitted by old smoky
diesel trucks (MACK are probably the worst) and all the unregulated
diesel engines in stationary equipemt and used in seaports. They are
invariably old, fixed timing low compression smoke belching monsters
for some reason, in spite of the fact they are not fuel efficient.

At any rate, the soot is a serious problem. Again, it's not from the
school bus or your car.

Gassers also produce more particulates than most people realize --
it's just too fine to see. It also contains less carcinogenic material.

I'm lucky to have made it out alive since the #21 bus I rode to school for

Since it frequently broke down, we were often rescued by it's twin #22, the

all of the Diesel fumes were left behind.

Re: [MBZ] Nasty diesel

2013-01-27 Thread G Mann
I read the article in depth. I know and understand the chemistry from
Diesel combustion.
One underlying issue immediately comes to mind after thinking the points of
both through to a logical conclusion.

We have reached the point where many very learned people can identify
threats to human health however, in each case fail to identify the root
cause of all these threats.

The root cause is death by city. Man as an organism is not and has not
evolved to live in close proximity to others in tightly packed groups. To
do so causes the rapid spread of disease, complications, and stress, both
to the physical and emotional components of the organism. It is, however,
inconvenient to mention that death by city even exists, much less attend to
it's root cause.

Much more convenient to ferret out a multitude of other things to blame,
thus relieving said learned individuals of the implied responsibility of
having mankind called to task for continuing bad decisions which harm
themselves and others .

Grant...
