Re: [MBZ] OT: Tonight's big repair
I've got a Rockwell (aka Delta), and ended up putting a new top wheel tilt support in, a beefed up spring, and new tyres. (Urethane). It already had a riser block and Carter guides (which got new bearings). I also shimmed out the upper wheel to bring it into alignment. The lower wheel was warped, but a dial gauge to measure runout and a large C clamp to judiciously apply pressure to tweak it seems to have largely cured things. (Next up, something in the 2hp range and some browning cast iron bushing type sheaves to bring the blade speed up a bit...) I can't remember the place I ordered parts from, but he is apparently well known, despite not having a significant web presence–he will mail you a black and white print catalog... OWWM is a wonderful place. I had to unsub after I moved, as I have no room for such luxuries. I bought and sold a number of items on there. Great place, lots of good people and information. There is nothing more satisfying than a repair like this. That's what I always enjoyed about resurrecting old MBs, as there were often a lot of little fiddly bits that were easy to return to service in this fashion. Insinkerator says to buy a new disposal. Instead I removed one screw and one circlip, put some marvel mystery oil on the rod, worked it back and forth a few times and reassembled. The worst part was getting the circlip on. Total cost: zip Total time: 15 minutes. Re: [MBZ] OT: Tonight's big repair
You did better than I did -- got me a new Buffalo 14 bandsaw for $65 last weekend. Naturally, it didn't work -- broken table trunion, blade won't track, etc. Took the wheel off a couple days ago and got the rusted in axle slide out and cleaned up, only to discover that it sticks when you crank in the tilt to track the blade because it jams up against the top rear cover, and the blade was garbage (not a surprise there). So tonight I took the cover off again and hammered a dent in it to permit the tilt bracket to swing free and installed a new blade. Oops, stupid saw uses 93 blades, not 93.5 like nearly all the Delta clones, so I gotta call tomorrow and change my order for a set of blades to 93 --- probably cost me some there. I also managed to turn the wrong knob and ran the new (too long) blade into the front cover, so it's probably not only too long but toast. But I managed to saw a couple scraps before I quit with the new blade, and I think this is going to be a great saw once I get it re- manufactured. Still have to bend the top rear cover back to clear the wheel when the blade is tracking properly and it needs a set of step pulleys (and the pair on it swapped to get it up to woodcutting speeds), but I think I'm gonna be OK on this one. I've got a beekeeping project underway -- I want to start three new hives next year on way or another, and that means at least 100 frames, and I'll also need at least 60 more for honey supers. The bandsaw is for cutting the frame parts -- way too much waste using a table saw to cut 5/16 thick end bars and 7/8 top bars from 2x6 or 2x8 stock. Lots of other uses too, eh?
