I can attest to the last sentence in this report. I used to make
bonfires for hayrides, and when I had a pile of old hedge posts, it
burned hot and long. Lotsa BTUs there.

It would make very good key heads (and trim) for MBs old enough to have
a real key.

What is the grain of osage orange like?

Maybe it would make good wood to make things like key holders.

Osage Orange is VERY hard, super dense. It starts out a vivid yellow color
when cut and mellows to a chocolate brown. VERY HEAVY.

I came home last night and a VERY LARGE limb on one of my hedge trees
had broken off. Hedge (or Osage Orange) is so hard I have never seen
large limbs break off from storms. It wasn't storming yesterday
anyway. I got to looking at it and I think lightning may have struck
the tree. Some of the limbs look blackened. I don't really have a
question, just thought it was interesting. Now I have get the chain
saws out this weekend and cut it up.

And make sure you have a sharp chain!

That stuff is da bomb for making planes and such as it dries to be hard
as rock (and nearly as impossible to cut). How many sizable chunks
could you get in one of those flat-rate postal boxes? I'd pay you for some!

are great for the fire pit and the big logs burn hot and long in the fireplace.
Of course, I am not going to need any firewood for months, but I can add it to
the pile.
