I agree, skiing in general can be dangerous for folks young enough to think they cannot be hurt. I wrapped my self around a large pine at the age of 20 in Vail, CO. Estimated speed was 50 mph. I got a free ride down the mountain and spent 10 days in hospital and feel very lucky to be walking. I have not been skiing since. I agree, it makes no sense whatsoever to have those things right there when the possibility of leaving the track at any speed is clearly a possibility. I was thinking that mesh fencing, but those posts are so close you would need a hard barrier as you mention; although, skidding on the ice or whatever at 90mph might be equally damaging, esp if you go rag-dolling on down the track. All that said, riding one of those things looks like a huge assumed risk no matter what safety provisions would be installed. ---R Mitch Haley wrote: andrew strasfogel wrote: I feel guilty asking this, but has anyone seen the actual video of the accident? I suspect they are now working on that. Probably did not expect bodies to fly that high if an accident occured. Tragic but a dangerous occupation and although he was young, I suppose he knew it was such. Got to feel for his family and friends who were no doubt thrilled that he was going to be in the Olympics.
