I didn't find it to be anywhere near as graphic as TV drama shows.
He veers up high on the inside of the curve, then goes airborne across the tube
to the outside, bounces over the wall, starts to tumble, but almost immediately
smacks the post and then doesn't move. Imagine sitting in a reclining chair and
driving the back of your helmet and neck into a hollow steel support post at
80mph. Made sort of a bonging sound. No blood, like throwing a rag doll at a wall.

I agree, skiing in general can be dangerous for folks young enough
to think they cannot be hurt. I wrapped my self around a large pine
at the age of 20 in Vail, CO. Estimated speed was 50 mph. I got a
free ride down the mountain and spent 10 days in hospital and feel
very lucky to be walking. I have not been skiing since.

I agree, it makes no sense whatsoever to have those things right there
when the possibility of leaving the track at any speed is clearly a
possibility. I was thinking that mesh fencing, but those posts are so
close you would need a hard barrier as you mention; although, skidding
on the ice or whatever at 90mph might be equally damaging, esp if you go
rag-dolling on down the track. All that said, riding one of those
things looks like a huge assumed risk no matter what safety provisions
would be installed.

A traumatic amputation of a limb is
not as lethal as a clean cut off. So I was told during
EMT training about 30 years ago. The blood vessels go
into spasm and tend to close off.
That being said, I would assume any amputation of the upper
leg to me 10% fatal unless you were immediately attended to
by someone who knew how to control bleeding, that would not
be me ;-)

Re: [MBZ] OT olympic death

2010-02-12 Thread Wonko the Sane
He was 21. I almost remember being 21. At that age, you feel invincible. I
have hiking boots older than him.

As a motorcycle rider, I find some dark humour in the fact that his helmet
didn't save him. (No helmet laws in Iowa.)

All that said, it is very sad. He had to be a very good athlete to get to
this level of competition, and a wrong swing of the hips in a turn cost him
his life.

If cutting your femoral artery can result in death in a few minutes, what does

Yes - easy to see 20 20 for hindsight - but you would think that the
contiengency of running off the edge would have been considered, and netting
or padding would have been added.
