determined by my body shop and the rep that it was a failure of the paint,

clearcoat, (answer:solids are shot single stage; metallics shot BC/CC.), he
offered to re-shoot it as BC/CC, hence, my question. Based on what I've
read and the link provided by Larry T(?), I'll be taking the BC/CC route.

I was also planning on r/r the bumper chrome but I think I'll wait till the
spring. And my shop said no problem doing that part of the job in the
spring.

One more thing..anyone have some nice, newer W126 Palomino seats or
interrior parts (drivers' door panel, in specific) they want to part with?

Thanks,

I note that my Dodge truck, which has (apparently) a single-stage
red paint, looks quite a bit better than my neighbor's similar
truck, newer, that has an obviously-failing clearcoat. I've
seen a lot of scabrous clear coats out there.

Re: [MBZ] Painting and looking for seats....

2009-10-17 Thread LarryT

Hi Angelo -
I went thru all of these questions when I painted my 911 Guards Red. I
did all of the work myself and it came equal to any factory job IMHO. I
used BC/CC because it's forgiving (I actually painted it, didn't like the
results and started over) and as has been mentioned, the clear coat is
sanded, polished and buffed before being waxed later.

I must admit, putting sand paper on the CC when it looked SO good was
heart wrenching. Anyway, I sanded with 800, 1000, 1500 and finally 2000 or
2500 (can't recall) before using 3 grades of buffing/polishing compounds
(each one was a complete sanding of every square inch of painted surface
BTW) before it was basically done.

It's a huge amount of work and I now know why a high quality paint job
can cost $5000 and up. But it's all in the labor and preparation. Things
like sanding are not preparatory or in anyway to be considered less than
applying paint. he sanding probably has more to do with the final
appearance than anything else. Well, in reality it's ALL equally important.

Also, I found BC/CC to be forgiving. I put more CC's on with the intent
of sanding them off to get a really smooth finish. I did have a couple of
mistakes - I think it was 3 drops of sweat hit the color when I was laying
it down. I got a small rag and cleaned it up - probably did some other
stuff also but can't recall - they are completely blended with the rest of
the paint and cannot be detected. If that had happened with a single stage
I believe the whole panel would have to be re-done.

This carries over to the time when you'll be driving the car again.
Paint chips and minor dents dings are still easier to repair than a single
stage - important if you'll be keeping the car for a while.

Every once in a while when the car is outside I notice an area which is
not quite as glossy as the others - all I need do is remove the wax and
start the 3 step buffing process and it is looking proper in no time.

I'm not sure why some cars have CC lift - my 89 Ford is lifting as is my
91 300D. My 78 240D still looks perfect after a 1995 repaint. It may have
something to do with the CC material itself - missing some critical
additives to help it withstand long-term sun exposure. I'm sure the paint
suppliers have specs to meet and once a car is 10+ years old the
manufacturers place little focus on such an old car. They probably think
most people will have traded up to a newer car and the 2nd hand owner is not
as critical (IMNSHO of course).

BTW, MB had a problem with 00 and '01 MBs losing pieces of paint
exposing corrosion underneath. I know one man who bought a S430 new and
never had any accidents, etc. - after 6 or 7 years the paint started coming
off in *sheets* - it was heading to court last I heard.

Good Luck,
LarryT

Yes, I have, too. The article Larry posted said BC/CC was better. In my
experience, it is not. The '72 220D/8 I had was painted with a single step
process and the paint was just about bulletproof.

Good to know. I need to splash some paint onto Gump this spring. She
has serious dandruff of the CC, so a single topping would be great if
it got rid of the flaking and itching on top

Try Head and Shoulders; it's supposed to get rid of flaking and itching on
top. :-)
