Sounds kinda like a stuck thermostat.  The radiator was cold, but
the engine was hot.

But I have only seen that personally on the newer (post '80) style.

Curt, it was (according to Doktor M.B.) stamped impellers that were
inferior, the OE were cast, and the stamped impellers wouldn't move enough
coolant so the engine would run hot or overheat.

No vanes on the water pump would make it overheat.

Some people look in a 123 tank and see coolant at the bottom, below the 
tops of the tubes, and conclude "it has water in it" even though the 
radiator and engine are drained.
