I know a fellow who does that sort of thing regularly. He is a small time dealer who buys cars for next to nothing, patches them up and resells for a profit. He goes around on Saturdays with the classified section of the paper and low balls people. If they ask $2500 he will go with cash and try to buy for $500. He says it is amazing how often people just want the car gone and will take the cash. He always gives them a line that no one else is likely to come as they are off to the lake for the weekend or whatever. Most folks don't really want to be bothered selling an old car. He doesn't even test drive most. He says if it runs and the tranny goes into forward and reverse, he will gamble that it is OK as he is getting it cheap enough to dump for his money back even if it is trouble. Most times, it is not.
