No appreciable loss or gain at B20 in the 95. Gump loves anything she gets On Tuesday, August 30, 2005, at 10:41 AM, Mitch Haley wrote: Does B20 increase or decrease MPG? Re: [MBZ] Who's running B100?
My B100 in that platform ends up being city, so crappy mileage. Dino gets me 35 highway, B100 got about 30. Both at 85mph summer, flat land, 10 hours days, hauling my own fuel (b100) On Tuesday, August 30, 2005, at 07:30 AM, J.B. Hebert wrote: I have run about 100 gallons of B100 through my '95 E300D (doesn't take long for me) and was looking to compare numbers with others on the list who are running B100. I gathered a fair amount of performance and economy data before and after the switch and was a little surprised by the outcome. Every source I've read on biodiesel indicates that you should expect a slight decrease in power and economy because there is slightly less energy in biodiesel. Well, I have noticed no significant drop in performance as indicated by the stopwatch. The butt dyno tells me that I'm a little down, but barely. So, I was expecting about a 5% drop in power, and I would guess that I am seeing less that 2%. What I have noticed, however, is that my economy is down a little over 15%, from around 29.9 MPG to 25.3 MPG. To make sure it wasn't the car, I ran a few tanks of dino fuel through and it again returned to around 29.9 MPG. Is anyone else out there running B100 who is as anal as I am and documented the changes? I'd love to compare notes. Thanks, J.B. J.B. Hebert wrote: > Is anyone else out there running B100 who is as anal as I am and > documented the changes? I'd love to compare notes. No hard figures, but here's an anecdotal point. In Ann Arbor, I adjusted the ALDA while I was running B20. When I moved to Auburn, and started running straight petrodiesel again, I got excessive smoke at full boost, and had to back off the ALDA about 1/8 turn to get back to a light haze. I figure the lower energy content of the biodiesel meant I could inject more of it for the same amount of oxygen, a bit like "oxygenated" gasoline. I can't compare fuel economy numbers because the type of driving I do is too different here compared to what it was in Ann Arbor. There it was just a daily commute of about 10 miles each way; here I'm doing a lot of running up and down I-5 as part of my job. David Brodbeck '83 300D Turbo

Re: [MBZ] Who's running B100?
My guess is the electronic engine management on your TDI is compensating for the lower BTU's in the B100, whereas the older cars with mechanical systems cannot do that dynamically. I have heard that you can gain back some performance/economy from an older vehicle by advancing the injection timing a degree or two. Regards, J.B. Re: [MBZ] Who's running B100?
Does B20 increase or decrease MPG? Bio has a higher cetane number, which might effectively advance the timing a bit. It seems to increase the mpg on school buses, at least up to B20 or so.
