Oxidation never sleeps. Unless you've done lab analysis periodically, I don't
see how you could have any confidence in that oil.

Depends on the garage. My 944's M1 15/50 was last changed on 7/16/1998.

1219 miles.

It's in an insulated garage which is part of the house and so temp
varies
maybe 20 degrees annually. In case I get the urge, I do have two
6-quart jugs
of M1 15/50 from Walmart close buy.

No worries. It doesn't go anywhere. Like most porches, it is

But you are special, Roger. The rest of us have to live with cold garages that
tend to induce moisture build up as well as other troubles associated with not
getting engine upto temp regularly to cook out the water.

Re: [MBZ] extended oil drain intervals for synthetics used with BioDiesel (was: Re: Here come the diesels!)

Hi Ernest,
In the overall sense of things, the number of people using BioD is still
pretty small. I haven't heard or seen anything about its affect on oil and
oil change intervals - sorry -

BioDiesel (was: Re: Here come the diesels!)

 hi Larry!

seen anyone do any comprehensive oil scanning on diesels using
 synthetic oils with B100?

i haven't been able to get anything from any of the synthetic
 manufacturers about what happens to their products when using BioD;
seems that on one hand, the need to change oil so often in our 617 would
be reduced on the basis of soot buildup (because there basically *isn't*
any), but on the other hand i'm wary about extending drain/fill
intervals because of the increased solvency of BioD and uncertainty of
what it does to the synthetics.
for the last 50K miles i've been using B100, i've been doing 3K
changes while using Delo, because it's pretty obvious that the BioD
breaks down the oil faster than #2.

 cheers!
 e

We've done a number of TBN (total base number) tests for customers
 over
the years and they all seem to say the same thing - the additives that
control the acids created by the combustion process are typically
 exhausted
by around 7500 miles. Based on this I generally suggest oil be changed
every 5000 miles or so which allows some safety factor as the TBN can be
depleted at different rates depending on a variety of factors. Of
 course,
some customers have special situations which dictate shorter changes.

We have not done many TBN tests lately as the Lab has increased the
price to $20 per tests - which is *my* cost. I should charge customers
 $20
plus a reasonable markup but I feel this is extreme and suggest customers
considering TBNs to wait and see what the Oil Sample Report says before
 making any decisons.

But I think 3000 mile changes are a waste of money -

Go by what the owner's manual says, not the sticker the shop puts in

 want the extra business.

Chains like Jiffy Lube push the 3K mile change interval really hard,
too. I think the average person probably changes their oil more often
than necessary, and their coolant, brake fluid, and transmission fluid
 not often enough.
