Most decidedly the 616 is different. It's lacking the 617's fifth
cylinder!

The shop manual I have is entitled, Service Manual, Engines 615, 616,
617.91. They're all the same. Forget your hyperness.

Remember, it takes an engine about eight hours after it's been shut down
before it reaches room temp! Even running it for 20-30 sec will warm the
engine enough to prevent proper, even adjustment. If you expect temps to
go below zero (F) the intake valve clearance needs to change from 0.004
to 0.006 (that's 0.10 mm to 0.15 mm).

Valves with negative clearance (always open) getting scorched by flames
flowing past them when they should be shut.

You should read the valve adjustment .pdf from the factory service manual.

Feeler gauges are a generic item. The specs are in millimeters, but you
can translate that to inches.

I obviously need some numbers that I need to adjust to...want to do it
hot as I know that is the better way to go.

For Mercedes diesels, stone cold is the way to go; hot adjustment is too
variable since the engine temperature is changing while you're working.

Intake 0.10 mm (0.004)0.15 mm (0.006) for steady ambient
   temperatures below -20 deg.C

Exhaust0.30 mm (0.012)

Any quidance greatly appreciated. Is the procedure online anywhere?

I'm sure it is. Marshall posted a site for manual pages earlier in the

Two additions: Exhaust valve clearance for OM617.95 engines is 0.35 mm
(0.3 is correct for non-turbo 61x engines).

If ambient temps are anticipated to drop below zero (F) even just
overnight I would go with the the 0.15 mm (0.006) intake valve
clearance. A valve adjusted to 0.10 mm at room temp is very likely to
hang open at zero (F) and if it does, the engine isn't going to start!
As temps drop, so does valve clearance (the temp coefficient of the
valves and head are different).

If Chris has a cold setting he wouldn't have seventeen daughters and still
be in his 20s.

Any online description on how to do this? Maybe in my friends W123 240D
 chiltons (or haynes?) manual...

Don't even consider doing the job without reading the manual!

Ignore the references to warm setting - ONLY adjust the valves cold!

Marshall,

This is for a 617...I'm talking about the 240D. braingears doesn;t work, for
some reason, for me. Would you please send me the same instructions for the
616 in the W115 240D (1976)?

  Thanks!

  Chris

Mitch Haley [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: Christopher McCann wrote:

damage - how? valves hit piston? valves move too much and damage themselves?

Valves with negative clearance (always open) getting scorched by flames
flowing past them when they should be shut.

You should read the valve adjustment .pdf from the factory service manual.
If you are on broadband, just say the word and I'm sure somebody will email
it to you.
