Mersenne: scientific american
There is an article this in the new Scientific American on distributed computing, but no mention of GIMPS. I feel cheated. spike _ Unsubscribe & list info -- http://www.scruz.net/~luke/signup.htm Mersenne Prime FAQ -- http://www.tasam.com/~lrwiman/FAQ-mers
Mersenne: Factorisation
What is the probability of a successful trial factorisation in the range of exponants currently being given out (16-17M)? Are the estimates given by the program for p-1 factorisation accurate? I've been going backwards for so long I stopped looking. :-) >ID: rlbrooks >866MHz P3 & 450MHz P2 (& 133MHz P1 doing factoring) I recently built a new Duron 800 system (OCed to 943MHz) to replace my old K5/133, so hopefully I'm going forward now. My most recent personal milestone was to pass 1 P90 year on DCs - not much, I know. I was annoyed that I fell just a few percent short when I turned in my previous result, and would have had to wait five months to turn in the next if I hadn't upgraded. The new machine runs fifteen to twenty times as fast, so I should double that in a couple of months or so. >Cheers... Re: Mersenne: 1000 barrier
Russ that IS an impressive milestone! I've only been processing 9 days but we all have to start somewhere. Tell you what, check out http://arstechnica.infopop.net/OpenTopic/page?q=Y&a=tpc&s=50009562&f=1220975 61&m=3680928671&p=1. We are looking for some "founding fathers". It'd be like getting a second wind. Mersenne: Hosting site for mersenne utilities?
I'm intending to release a small package of utilities that I have written which relate to the mprime program. I could host it at my ISP, but ISP accounts have their disadvantages, and I would prefer to have an independent account with a URL that won't change in the near future. Is there a well-known "semi-official" repository for such programs, or would anyone like to start one? Maybe someone has an FTP server which is going to be around for a long time that they can offer an account on?
