Just like the outage over Labor Day weekend we seem to have an outage that
started around Wedneday before Thanksgiving. Most things were functional
then but the status updates had last run 8am. Now we've got an

unresponsive

server. Anyone heard anything?

Is it my imagination, or has the server gotten far less reliable in recent
months?

Mersenne: primenet error

2002-11-17 Thread Michael Kilfoyle
I think all my PCs are once again full of work. I was out of town Fri.
Sat. and I did see the error reaching primenet on Wed. Thur. It is not
on all the logs so some PCs were impacted and some not. Maybe it was a
time of day access issue.

Re: Mersenne: Re: Mersenne Digest V1 #1009

2002-10-07 Thread Michael Kilfoyle

:) Thanks... the 486/50 in question used to run but it and some others
had not been working on prime recently as I had started to run into
system errors as the versions got newer.

So I though with the new 22.9.1 why not give it a shot. The strange
thing (as reported in a separate post) is that after a day and a half
the 2250 went away and it got an assignment. When I started up a
second one yesterday it got an assignment right away. (about 3 hrs after
the 1st had gotten one)...

SO I am glad they are useful again.. even with a 6 or 7 month factor
time frame.

:) ... We just keep trucking along.
regards to all...
Michael..

Where to, now ?

The Hack Furby Challenge is a $250 prize offered by
Peter van der Linden http://www.afu.com/fur.html for
software to do something with a Furby. The original
Hack Furby Challenge was won by Jeffrey Gibbons who
supplied a Furby Upgrade Kit hardware, the new prize is
 for software.

Peter van der Linden suggests You can program Furby to solve
mathematical puzzles and equations, to look for Mersenne prime
numbers, or simply to act as a speaking clock.

 The $74 upgrade,
 http://www.appspec.net/products/UpgradeKits/FurbyUpgrade/root.html
 replaces the original 6502 CPU with a 20MHz 8051 with 1MByte
of serial Flash RAM and 1152 bytes of normally accessible RAM.

Clearly this is not enough to Lucas-Lehmer test big Mersennes,
but it is enough to Reverse Factor 3072 bit factors upto
3072 bit exponents given a prime as an input.

As Reverse Factoring (without factoring P-1) is asymptotically
more productive at completely factoring any of all 2^N-1
compared with LL testing just prime exponents this shouldn't
be a problem given enough batteries and patience.

I will post my analysis of Reverse Factoring shortly.
