  Subject: [meteorite-list] Meteorites and
  Kids

  Hello Everyone,
I recently had the chance to talk about meteorites to six classes of third
grade students, something which I enjoy very much. If you have not done this
and you get the opportunity, I would encourage you to do so. It is really a
lot of fun. Let me share a few of my observations.
Kids love the big heavy irons, bring at least one but make sure it is a
solid piece. They can pass it around but if it is a rust flaky Nantan, for
example, they will manage to peel off some lose rust spots and it is kind of
embarrassing to the presenter. Also do not let them handle a Sikhote-Alin
shrapnel piece. Some shrapnel have VERY sharp edges which can easily cut small
hands, which would also be embarrassing to the presenter.
I like to bring a large piece of quartz crystal with me to make a nice
contrast between a nice fusion crusted stone and terrestrial rocks and
minerals. Some kids, though, will be as interested if not more
  interested in the quartz.
The children were very much aware of the monetary value of meteorites. A
girl asked how much I would offer her if she found a meteorite from the moon
and I jokingly responded, "well, at least $10.00." The kids got the joke
because they knew it would be worth much more than that. A few kids focused
almost exclusively on the monetary value of meteorites ("how is that one
  worth, etc.").
I bring along several books with nice pictures of meteorites to augment the
presentation and my homemade "Magnet on a Stick" (actually, a big dowel rod).
My wife teaches third grade language arts and in her class, a girl had brought
in her rock collection for me to examine to determine if any were meteorites.
For now, lets call her the "Rock Girl."
I talked about the properties of meteorites and I demonstrated they are
attracted to a magnet and earth rocks are not. There are some terrestrial
exceptions but I figured why complicate matters by pointing out the rare
exceptions. Rock girl brings a metallic looking rock towards me, I hold the
magnet on a stick out to her, she places it on the magnet and low and behold,
  IT STICKS.
Silence fell over the room and the little girl had a grin that stretched
from ear to ear. Simultaneously, my eyes open, my mouth drops and I hurriedly
bring the object closer for inspection. After years of working with
meteorites, I immediately knew what it was...
  Hematite :-(
Okay, now I back peddle a little and explain that there ARE some earth
rocks that kinda look like meteorites and will stick to a magnet and HEMATITE
is one (you can see an example of this great meteorwrong on my website). South
Georgia is not known for large quantities of hematite but I failed to ask her
immediately where she obtained her sample. My mistake.
A little while latter I show the kids three large perfectly formed
tektites: a dumbbell, a disk, and a teardrop. I explain the differences
between meteorites and tektites, I let the kids hold them, and all of a sudden
the Rock Girl says, "I have one of those." She pulls a black glassy object
from a box on her desk and hands it to me. I look at the top surface and
  recognize it immediately...
  It's a tektite!
Now, you have to understand my excitement at this point. The Georgia
Tektite strewn field is about four or five counties west of the school. As far
as I know, no Georgia tektite has ever been found in Bryan County, which is
where the little girl lives. I looked over at my wife and after seeing
literally dozens of kg of tektites even she recognized it as a probable
tektite. I began thinking that the Georgia strewn field has just now been
greatly extended when I turned it over and my heart sank.
The other side was very smooth and concave, as if it were once part of the
interior of a larger object and was part of a gas bubble.
It was a Chinese tektite. Exactly like my presentation pieces and exactly
like the dozens of kg I have sold in the past. I then asked the girl how she
obtained her rock collection and she showed me her collection box with nice
glossy printed cards. The tektite (and hematite) were part of a set that her
father had purchased. Unfortunately, there were no meteorites in the set but
she did have the beginnings of a very nice rock collection.
This reminded me that about four years ago, one boy brought me a glassy
object that looked like it might be a tektite. I sent it to Bill Glass but the
microprobe analysis showed that it was not.
I showed a large slice of Allende and I casually asked if anyone could tell
me waht the large white spots were. After only a few hints, a teacher
  correctly

2002-02-02 Thread Bob King

Walter,
That was a wonderful, inspirational story. Thank you for sharing it with
the list. I agree the kids really like the irons. Adults too. I've also found
that people really enjoy a nice chondrite thin section like Allende in
polarized light. The stained glass effect just takes them in. And while
they're enjoying the sheer gorgeousness of the thing, I'll explain a bit
about chondrules and the first solid stuff in the solar system. When
someone's sense of wonder comes out it's so much easier to
communicate a few facts about what they are seeing.

 Hi Walter and all,

Last year I also presented to a class of third graders and thought I'd
share
a great way to get the class's attention (as if that is needed). Getting
ready for the presentation, I laid the meteorites out on a metal side
table
which the teacher provided. Knowing that part of my talk was on how to
identify meteorites from terrestrial rocks, I obviously bought along a
rare
earth magnet. A flash of genius struck ;-)
Holding tightly, I carefully put my rare earth magnet on the metal table.
(You probably know where I'm going). During the talk I asked young Billy
to come up and help me demonstrate that meteorites were magnetic. It was
his
birthday and being a larger third grade boy made it all the better. I held
a
small Canyon Diablo iron and asked him to pick up the magnet and show the
class how it stuck to the meteorite. Young Billy reached for the magnet
and..obviously wasn't able to move it, try as he might. Both he and
the
class got a good laugh and the class paid even more attention than they
 might have.
The third graders were a great age group to share our love of meteorites
with. Their minds were sponges, soaking up every bit of knowledge there
was,
they were interested in and liked learning, and they were studying the
solar
 system. A perfect audience.
A few days later, I received a package containing letters from every one
of
the students. I still have them, and hopefully they also still have their
small, weathered piece of the solar system (a great way to get rid of
those
 small broken weathered NWA pieces).

 Regards,
 Frank

P.S. I probably wouldn't use this trick on older students. They might
actually get the magnet off the table than then pinch their finger between
the magnet and table or meteorite. Coincidently, just the other day I was
playing around with a couple of rare earth magnets and the result was a
nice
blood blister to show for it. Guess one of these days I'll grow up :-)

Re: [meteorite-list] Just a Question

2002-02-02 Thread John Gwilliam

Mohamed,
May I suggest an explanation for your finding interesting rocks in an area
you claim has none?

Over the past 40 years, I've spent a lot of time collecting interesting
rocks during my travels around the western United States. While out hiking
or hunting, I've got a habit of picking up just about anything that looks
interesting or out of place. As the day wears on and my pack gets heavier,
I often reevaluate the effort it takes to carry some of the rocks and their
value to me. Many of them are often discarded along the trail many miles
from where I picked them up.

Here's an even better example.

I have a good friend who collected a trailer full of coprolite specimens
near Lake Powell (Utah) about 12 years ago. On his way home, one of the
wheel hubs on his trailer broke while he was still on a rugged dirt road
and about 50 miles away from the collection site. Not wanting someone to
steal his coprolite while he went for repair parts, he hid his load of
coprolite in a ravine a short distance off the road. Several days later,
when he returned with the parts, he found someone had stolen his
trailer. Now he had no way to haul away his precious cargo of
coprolite. As far as both of us know, the pile of coprolite is still
sitting in the ravine just waiting to be discovered by someone out
walking in the area. Remember now, this pile of coprolite is 50 miles from
the actual collection site and in a totally different geological
area. Whoever finds it might jump to the conclusion that the site in the
ravine is the actual place where it weathered out of the earth after 65
million year.

Their ignorance could allow them to make an incorrect assumption. Who
knows, they might even have a good enough imagination to decide they fell
from the sky.

There are a lot of different scenarios that can result in rocks being found
in places where they normally shouldn't be. Many, like erosion, can be
explained, but others cannot. Such is the case with your rocks. Just
because you can't, or don't, understand how they got to where you found
them, doesn't mean the only explanation is they fell out of the sky.

I understand your enthusiasm. Please divert some of it into getting
yourself educated about minerals and meteorites. Your time out in the
field will become a lot more productive.

Regards,

John Gwilliam

PUT DOWN THE PIPE BACK AWAY FROM THE HOOKA...Get some fresh air dude.
Igneous rocks can be anywhere. Believe it or not the Earths crust was once
molten, and it has changed a few times in say the last 4 BILLION YEARS.
We have a Lake in ArizonaBartlett Lake...If you take a gold pan there
and pan anywhere on the shore you will find TONS of Black Sand and rotted
quartsz which is usually found with GOLD. IF you pan a little longer you
will end up ounces and ounces of a fine GOLD Metal.
Spend a whole day there and you could end up with a pound of the stuff. It
LOOKS Like Gold, It is found in a Gold bearing region of the US, and is
found in conjunction with rotted quartz and black sand...following your way
of thinking IT MUST BE GOLD!!! EUREKA I AM RICH

BUT you can not tell anyone about my strikeI do not want anyone coming
here and stealing all the GOLD.

Thanks Mohamed...you helped realize that IF I want something badly enough
all I have to do is BELIEVE in it to the point of ridicule and it WILL BE
SO!

Re: [meteorite-list] Just a Question

2002-02-02 Thread Sharkkb8

Is it not very strange that I find so many meteowrongs in the same place?

Nope. Not very strange. I, too, can find so many meteorwrongs in my front
yard, in my back yard, down the street and over the hill. My neighbor can
find many meteorwrongs, too. Pretty much the same for my brother in Santa
Cruz, and a guy I know near San Antonio.

They're rocks, dude. Meteorwrong = rock. Rocks are common. Multi-rocks.
Lotsa rocks. Lotsa rocks, yes...lotsa meteorites, no.

*sigh*

[meteorite-list] Rare Erath Magnets and Digital Cameras

2002-02-02 Thread Walter Sullivan

I would like to take a rare earth magnet on a trip. I will be carrying a
digital camera. I have read that these magnets can really screw up a
computer if it gets close. Does anyone have any information if that will
affect my digital camera or microdisks storing the images?
Thanks.

[meteorite-list] Advise

2002-02-02 Thread Michael Blood

Dear Jim and all,
I have enjoyed some of the posts to our residential believer: Mr.
Mohamed. I appreciated the gentle caring responses many of the list
extended to him - INITIALLY.
HOWEVER, what I find MORE amazing than Mr. Mohamed's unyielding
stubbornbelief that he is right and everyone else is wrong is that there
are so many list members willing to continue to invest sincere effort
in attempting to provide assistance in the form of information,
referrals,
etc. I find this as irrational as Mr. Mohamed, himself, as though he had
not CLEARLY indicated, over and over and over, a total unwillingness to
apply logic to this situation. What is it y'all don't get???
Do you all still talk for 20 minutes to unwanted phone solicitors?
Do you still spend 3 hours discussing the bible with everyone who
knocks
on your door to sell you HIS/HER interpretation of God? When asked a
question - by ANYONE - do you feel compelled to answer it?
Amazing.
On the other hand, I did enjoy Mr. Mohamed's Nieborhood.
(I also still suspect it MAY be Michael Casper with some email relay
getting all you good hearted people to dance like puppets while he
laughs
hysterically in his NY home! - Haven't any of you been called by Michael
with an Italian accent posing as a rich Italian collector and wanting

I can hardly wait until tomorow (Sun) so I can spend 3 hrs trying to
convince a bible thumping creationist who knocks on my door that just
perhaps his view of reality might possibly be in errorbut then
again,
maybe not.

[meteorite-list] Eagle Butte - Anyone knows this meteorite?

2002-02-02 Thread Tettenborn

Matteo and List,

I was also curious about this Canadian Meteorite. The U of Calgary
meteorite page (http://www.geo.ucalgary.ca/cdnmeteorites/) does not mention
Eagle Butte.

Yet, there is an Eagle Butte crater in southern Alberta.

Eagle Butte Alberta, Canada
Lat. 49.70; Long: -110.58 Diam. (km): 19; Age (My): 65 +/-
Sawatzky, H. B. ; Two probable late Cretaceous astroblemes in western
Canada; Eagle Butte, Alberta and Dumas, Saskatchewan; Geophysics, v. 41n. 6,
p. 1261-1271, 1976

I seriously doubt that these iron meteorites could survive since the late
cretaceous unless very fortunate entombment (Lake Murray scenario) occurred
after impact.

Anyone else have any info?

Cheers,

Mike Tettenborn

Dear Michael all,

The only thing that I like about Mohamed is his enthusiasm, I would like
to see his focus redirected to education instead of exercise wandering
around collecting every rock he sees.

Do you still spend 3 hours discussing the bible with everyone who
 knocks
on your door to sell you HIS/HER interpretation of God?

No I tell them to come back when they have scientific evidence then point
to the no soliciters sign as I close the door.

Do you all still talk for 20 minutes to unwanted phone solicitors?

I thought that was what answering machines were for, screening out the
worthless.

RE: [meteorite-list] Export permits and African meteorites

2002-02-02 Thread Rhett Bourland

Weird. I can't speak for everyone's experience with Dr. McCoy but I've had
nothing but extremely pleasant interactions with him.
I can understand the governments reluctance to deal with dessert meteorites.
Let's face it, they're part of the government and have to follow all the
laws and regulations that go with that. I don't really see it as locations
vs. scientific value in this case. I'm sure quite a few scientists would
probally love to get their hands on some of the amazing NWA's out there but
due to the relations with some of the countries as well as lack of export
permits just aren't allowed to work with them.
As for myself, I love the desert rocks. I'd prefer to have a nice meteorite
with a known location and all that stuff if they're available but that
doesn't mean I don't love all my beautiful desert achondrites in my
collection that I got for a fraction of the price that they would be if they
had that known location.

I am loathe to admit it -- but there is something there which starts to make
Canadian's officials look collector friendly, eager to see you guys,

Seems
again that National Origins and not Solar Origins somehow affects the
scientific value of meteorites--go figure...

RE: [meteorite-list] Meteorites and Creation

2002-02-02 Thread Rhett Bourland

And how is it that you know that Adam and Eve were around 25? Also,
following the rule that the simplest option must be the best, wouldn't it
just be easier to say that the rock formed ~4.5 billion years ago instead of
trying to come up with a way to explain how a rock could actually be much
younger?
This is reminding me of another thread where someone is trying to convince
us all that they have found a cache of previously unknown types of
meteorites. Sure, I guess it could be possible but it seems pretty safe to
say a better explanation could be found by taking a cold, hard, and unbiased
look at the evidence and reading what it says instead of looking at the
evidence and trying to make it fit any preconceived notions.
But then again, that's just my view.

payment. Let the company throw it away. When you get those pre approved
letters in the mail for everything from credit cards to 2nd mortgages
and junk like that, most of them come with postage paid return
envelopes, right?
Well, why not get rid of some of your other junk mail and put it in
these cool little envelopes! Send an ad for your local chimney cleaner
to
American Express. Or a pizza coupon to Citibank. If you didn't get
anything
else that day, then just send them their application back! If you want
to remain anonymous, just make sure your name isn't on anything you send
them. You
can send it back empty if you want to just to keep them guessing! Never
fail
to return a no postage required envelope.
Eventually, the banks and credit card companies will begin getting all
their junk back in the mail. It'll let us let them know what it's like
to get junk mail, and best of all THEY'LL be paying for it! TWICE!!
Let's help keep our postal service busy since they say e-mail is cutting
into their business, and that's why they need to increase postage again!

Of course, whenever any business incurs any greater expenses, they find a way to pass those costs on to the consumerfinance charges, rates, fees, etc. We might just be inventing clever, additional expenses that WE have to pay for, ultimately.

Dear Listees
I apologize for the fact that I don't own a digital camera, and I'm a remote
sensing scientist - go figure. I was going to post this in a few weeks when I
did. But the timing is critical. Amazingly, I found myself on Gazos Beach on
the south San Mateo County (CA) coast and voila a chondrite (ordinary,
unfortunately) but on the other side, a howardite. Very cool. I'll bring it to
Tucson in a few days. Howmuch? well...

 Anyone else have any info?

Of all the craters larger than 10 meters across, only 3 older than 50,000
years old have meteorite fragments associated with them. Wolf Creek,
300,000 yrs, and Veevers and Monturaqui at 1 million years old. All three
in dry desert regions. Older meteorites have been found, but not associated
with impact craters.
While it may not be impossible to have fragments from a 65 million year

Glad to hear you were fortunate enough to witness one
of the many fire balls (both natural and manmade)
that occur each night over our heads:
These do happen all the time, but are still rarely
seen or reported!

Andy, while all the details are still fresh in your
mind, please submit a report form to one of the
astronomical organizations on what you saw?

Here are a few to choose from. Just pick whichever ONE
of these has the most questions you can answer readily
and accurately - and thanks!

Please note the exact time of your sighting is also

Has anyone else reported the massive meteor which
passed over Houston on Thursday evening (31st Jan
2002) ? Myself and 2 friends were in west Houston at
about 9pm when we spotted the object travelling
North-South
almost from horizon to horizon. I guess it came from
about 20 degrees high in the north to about 20 degrees
in the south and it wasn't quite directly overhead,
but high nonetheless. It was travelling very fast
(faster than a low-flying jetplane but not as fast as
a shooting star), covering the distance in about 4 or
5 seconds. It was bigger than any meteor that i've
ever seen and was very bright with a bright tail,
which
didn't seem to fade or leave a trail and it was white
with a slight greenish tinge in colour. The length of
the tail decreased as it came towards the end of it's
flightpath. My guess is that it was a large meteor
skimming the atmosphere which would have done quite a
bit of damage had it come down.

Cheers,

Andy McConville

No, absolutely couldnt be. 9pm Central time jan 31 is
0300UT Feb 1.

Iridium 27 decayed around 0530-0600UT Feb 1. Anyway
the described motion isnt consistent with a satellite
its much too fast. ANY re-entering object going nearly
overhead and visible horizon-horizon will be visible
for about a minute.

Bright meteors are much more common than re-entering
satellites.
