[meteorite-list] FW: Canadian Meteorite statistics

2002-03-10 Thread Herd, Richard

Dear List:

It looks like Bernd got the following but no one else did, because of a
missing hyphen -. Here are the statistics, showing the latest Canadian
meteorite ranks as #22 in mass on the TKW scale. It is the second largest
stony meteorite FIND in Canada, after Vulcan, but not the second largest
meteorite found in Canada, nor the second largest stony meteorite found in
Canada.

Dear Bernd:

Hi. The TKW of Iron Creek was less than originally reported (386 lbs).
How do we know this? The meteorite was re-weighed in 1999 and presently
the main mass is now 145.25 kilos. Not enough has been distributed to
account for 30 kilos, nor is there enough cutting to suggest that amount
was removed, in fact far less is indicated, maybe as little as a
kilogram.

Here's my e-mail to Monica Grady of June 1, 1999, referred to in the 5th
Edition Natural History Museum Catalogue:

=

Dear Monica: As a result of recent discussions, the Curator at the
Provincial Museum of Alberta, Ron Mussieux, has confirmed that the
weight of
the main mass of the Iron Creek, Alberta iron meteorite is now about
320 lbs
or 145.25 kilos. The original mass is recorded everywhere as 386 lbs
or
over 175 kilos. As there is no evidence that 66 lbs of the meteorite
has
been distributed elsewhere, i.e. far less is recorded in other places
and
there is no evidence of where 30 kilos could have been removed, it
appears
that the original weight was in error. A consequence of this is that
the
Madoc, Ontario iron meteorite at 167.5 kilos original mass now is the
heaviest/largest found in Canada.

Please contact Ron at [EMAIL PROTECTED] to confirm this for
revision
in your catalogue.

Thanks.

The listing of Canadian meteorites based solely on TKWs is, for the top
25, as of today:

Bruderheim - Madoc - Iron Creek - Abee - Springwater -
Dresden(Ontario) - Osseo - Peace River -
Manitouwabing - Hagersville - St-Robert - Vulcan - Shelburne -
Edmonton (Canada) - Skookum - Millarville -
Beaver Creek - Bruno - Mayerthorpe - Annaheim - Tagish Lake (?)
- Elm Creek - Welland - Belly River -
Hodgeville - Kyle (Last two both 7kg).

Top 10 largest meteorites found in Canada based
on the weights of single recovered masses:

Madoc - Iron Creek - Abee - Osseo - Dresden - Manitouwabing
Springwater - Bruderheim - Hagersville - Vulcan

As Richard Herd indirectly but clearly states
this sequence changes if you consider the TKWs:

Bruderheim - Iron Creek - Madoc - Abee - Springwater

I just thought that I would let everybody know that I have some gold basins
ending in the next few hours on ebay that are still bid or started at less
than half of what you typically see them offered at on dealers websites.
Also thin section sunday seems to be a dud this week so deals may be flying
today. I dont seem to be getting any bids. This morning for todays ending
Thin section auctions I still see these thin section with these current high
bids:
H3.8 - $1.25
CO3 - $10.51
CV3 - $18.41
CR2 - $46
Hvittis EL6 - $36
Allende $24
3 different Vaca Muertas. Only one has reached $20
The list goes on but I am to depressed to look for more. Get your thin
sections today on Thin Section sunday.

Hello everyone. I hope this message finds you well. If you haven't been
to
the IMCA's website at www.meteoritecollectors.org since early Sunday
morning
I would like to invite you to come take a look at some of the changes that
have been made. When I first got the site up and running the main concern
was what was said on it and not really what it looked like. Well, with
the
help of some really great people the content was taken care of and now
I've
redesigned the website to reflect the professional level that the IMCA
works
 at.
If wanting to see the new look of the site isn't enough to check out the
website then you can also go to see the first issue of The Fusion Crust,
the official newsletter of the IMCA that is editied by Martin Horejsi.
So come on everyone, go check out the site and let me know what you think!
 Best wishes,

Chuck,

Great idea...go ahead and start your own list and when it is setup with all
the categories go ahead and let us all know and we will be glad to look it over
and join.

I intially thought your post was common spam. Go back into the setup of you
account and take the time to change the name of your account to better reflect
who you are. Right now it says that you are "CoxSMTPwest". Then it is customary
to sign your posts with your name.

As for tests and hi's and other stuff...I know that something that is
labelled test is not worth the look and I delete it. As for someone saying
hello, well that is part of being in a community. As for the rest of the
categories...I kinda like the way things are now...but that shouldn't stop you
from setting up your own list...let us all know when it is ready.

Thanks,

Mark M.

[meteorite-list] Willow Grove Meteorite - Farmer Buckley's Surprise Harvest

2002-03-10 Thread Jeff K.

G'day List,
As a member of the Melbourne Museum, I receive the
Museum Victoria Magazine. In the current issue there
is a great story on Willow Grove; an anomalous
ungrouped nickel-rich ataxite meteorite. Here's an
interesting little insert to the main story.

Farmer Buckley's Surprise Harvest.

In 1995 Moe dairy farmer David Buckley was clearing
one of his paddocks for pasture when he struck the
first piece of an unusual looking rock. Unlike the
other rocks he was removing from the paddock, this one
had a particularly rusty look and when he picked itup
to get a closer look, the weight of it was more than
twice that of similar sized rocks.

It was different from all the other rocks in the
paddock, but I wasn't sure what it could be. I thought
it might be a clump of iron but I wanted to find out
more about it, says David.

David showed the 2.7kg lump of rust-covered metal to
some mates, one of whom, Howard Orton, contacted Bill
Birch at the museum to have it checked out. This was
after the mandatory test with the oxy-acetylene torch
at the local garage!

A subsequent find in 1998 yielded a 9kg meteorite.
With the smaller rock now in the museum's collection,
the Buckley family have held on to the larger rock. A
family treasure, David intends to keep the meteorite
for both its story-telling value, and his own personal
souvenir of the solar system. ***

I spoke to Bill Birch (Senior Curator Geology -
Melbourne Museum), and he mentioned that the 2 pieces
did not appear to fit together and there were likely
other pieces out there! If anyone is interested in a
photocopy of the main story, just let me know I'll
send you a copy.

Thanks,
Jeff K.
