Jay, Sorry for the late response. I have been busy filing orders for meteorites. Everything I posted the other day has sold. Large tektites can be found for sale. I have several 100+ gram pieces in my collection. I got them a few years ago from Paul Liu of Great Wall Consulting. The URL is here: http://www.greatwallct.com/ Many of the Chinese Tektites you see on ebay were obtained from Paul (for pennies/gram)! Also, check out the Paul and Jim's Meteorite Exchange website. http://www.meteorite.com/ They have a nice selection from many localities and I believe more will be added soon. BTW, there is a guy selling on ebay who goes by the id "dagoodstuff" who sells "large" and "huge" indochinites of 40 and 50 grams. Don't fall for this. It is misleading seller hype. Jay From: Mark Bostick [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: [meteorite-list] GOLD BASIN RESULTS Date: Fri, 3 May 2002 02:58:26 -0500 Hello Everyone again, And now the moment we have all been waiting for.(drum roll please.) THE RESULTS OF THE MARK IS FEELING BETTER GUESS ILL GIVE AWAY A GOLD BASIN THING.. Frank Chessey nominated Bob Verish. Which is this spiret I could nominate Donald O'Keefe, who has been leaving around the strewfield waiting for retirement. Sounds like a way to kill a few years before the pension checks:-) Mike Farmer and Bob Verish nominated Skip Wilson. Who has done much for our interest and seems well liked by all. Who I do not believe I ever met (go to Denver and Tuscon and try remembering everyone's face that you were not introduced to). And who is closest to there collection..(that answered). 1. Mike Farmer - 4 miles - Cat Mountain - with an honorable mention of Udal Park - 5 miles 2. Matt Morgan. 6 miles - Bear Creek Iron - Co 3. Gordon Trone 8 miles - Williamette 4. Me (Wichita, Kansas) - ~10 miles - Belle Plaine, Kansas 5. Ken Newton (Lehigh Acres, Fl.) - 20 miles - Bonita Springs - Fla, 6. Steve Witt (Lake Station) 35.5 miles - Hamlet 7. Greg Redford (Fairfax, Va.) 100 miles - Stauton, Va. Including one e-mail sent to the wrong person and fowarded to me and one DAT file I wouldn't/couldn't open. And so the winner isJudges..(pause). (pause again)(you know suspence). 1. SKIP WILSON 2.. Honorable mention goes to fellow IMCA member Gordon Trone for living closest to the Willamette, the meteorite I would take if I could just one. I live about 8 miles from where the Willamette was found...same county. I have a small but expensive, piece of it in my collection. Gordon Trone. 3. Honorable mention also goes to Greg Redford who is the furtherest from his collection! (again that answered). 4. To fellow IMCA member Jeff Kuyken, who gave my favorite reply. I've got a few within a 90 odd minute drive. How's Cranbourne (~30km), Willow Grove (~90km) and Murchison (~150km)? Just for interest; there's a road in Murchison called Meteorite Street! Jeff Kuyken. I tried to get a street maker to produce some Meteorite Street and a Impact Lane sign for me but he only wanted to to do drives and wouldnt do otherwise (really). 5. And Finally Dean Bessey. For living in Canada and therefore gets a handycap. Just think hoq boring this might have been had we all lived in Canada. For their efforts, (not the sign-maker) they win consulation prices of a free Oum Rockba meteorite If someone would foward Skip's address or if one of the list members that knows him would like to be a go between please send me your address. Honorable mention winners should also send me their address to claim their prizes. And now a little more serious.. I would like to thank Jim Kreigh and Ingrid Monrad for there field work on the meteorite and the great dinner they held for us in Tuscon this year. There was a lot of money put out to make this possible and it was really enjoyed by all. Where else could I have eat with Robert Hagg and the Labennes while they are talking about finding moon meteorites. Both where very pleasant to me and others and we very much appreciate it. Thanks again! I would like to note here that Jim Kreigh is still working on mapping the strewfield. [meteorite-list] The SOHO-500 Comet Contest
http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/comet.html The SOHO-500 Comet Contest Contest Objective Predict the perihelion date and time of SOHO-500. Rules 1. The contest is open to anyone, anywhere, except to Doug Biesecker and Derek Hammer. 2. Entries must be e-mailed to Doug Biesecker ( [EMAIL PROTECTED]) no later than the end of the day May 31st, 2002 EDT (0400 UT, June 1). Valid entries must include your name, your e-mail address, and the date and time, including year, month, day and time of day in UT. Only one entry per person will be accepted. 3. In the case of the 500th comet being an archive discovery, then the discoverer is also not eligible, but the closest guess still wins. 4. Guesses will not be revealed publicly until the entry period has closed. However names of those who have submitted guesses will be posted to verify that an entry has been received on your behalf. See the web site sungrazer.nascom.nasa.gov/soho500/ Note: The web site will be updated as often as possible, but due to travel engagements, in the next few weeks, there will be delays. Prize Win a DVD or VHS copy of the SOLAR MAX movie (www.solarmovie.com). Solar Max is a movie about the Sun. It also shows, very briefly, the Twin sungrazers (C/1998 K10 and K11). It is definitely very cool, featuring images not only from various satellites, but also of sites of international interest, such as Machu Picchu in Peru, Newgrange in Ireland, Lake Titicaca in Bolivia and Tromso in Norway. It is available commercially in a variety of video formats, including DVD and VHS (NTSC and PAL). Find out more... Other Notes Disclaimers Determination of the SOHO comet numbers is entirely at the discretion of Douglas Biesecker. He assigns the numbers in order of discovery. These numbers are not an official product of any recognized astronomical body. However, they are a very convenient way to refer to the various comets and to keep track of the total number. Definition of an archive discovery: This is also at the discretion of Douglas Biesecker. If a comet is reported more than 36 hours after it is first visible in the data (and there are no large gaps in the data), then the comet will be designated as an archive claim. In cases of ambiguity, the 36 hour rule will begin at the time when an average observer might be expected to have been able to find the comet. * Neither ESA, NASA, or any other institution associated with SOHO is involved with the adjudication of claims or providing the prize. The contest is designed to increase the public's awareness of SOHO's discoveries and demonstrate the ease of accesibility of scientific data sets by the general public. Links Tips Links o As of May 2, 2001, the count is up to SOHO-435. Keep track of discoveries at sungrazer.nascom.nasa.gov/recent.html. o The SOHO Homepage, LASCO Homepage Tips: Possible Strategies 1. Re: [meteorite-list] Don't count us out
At one time, I lived on the ridge overlooking Palolo Valley. There's a really neat extinct volcanic crater in the back of the valley, and with binocs, sometimes you can make out wild pigs (that's pronounced pgs). If you count vertical distance, that maybe 1 1/2 miles. The Honolulu fall smacked into Honolulu's downtown and harbor area, about 5 miles from Wilhelmina Rise (the ridge.) Now, however, I live 110 miles from the nearest fall site, with ocean in between; too bad. There's also an unconfirmed fall from 1966, when a meteorite supposedly clipped a metal ladder on the outside of one of the obervatories on top of Haleakala, but was immediately lost in the surrounding cinders. Wonder how dey figger it was a meteorite, when they nevah spot da buggah! Tracy Latimer __ Meteorite-list mailing list [EMAIL PROTECTED] http://www.pairlist.net/mailman/listinfo/meteorite-list

[meteorite-list] African Meteorites are cool
African Meteorites are cool because From where they come its very cold. Some of them are quite young But most of them are very old. In their Northwest African realms They spent many a cool night Just to bake in the Saharan Sun After the cool morning breeze was gone. Each night they gazed up at this beautiful, star-studded sky Whence once they came from some asteroids nearby. Some even call our Moon or the Red Planet their home Keeping each other company they didnt feel alone. Out there in the Saharan Desert this heavenly lode One cool aeolian morning decided Time was ripe to give up their sandy abode. So one by one they travelled this globe Some of them have found a new home here For good at least thats what I hope! The total mass of this beutiful silicate was 262g. Some slices show small and scarce metal inclusions. Vaca Muerta is a differentiated silicate and metal rich meteorite containing many silicate and eucrite inclusion around 10% in volume surrouded by a matrix of mesosiderite composition The Vaca Muerta parent body must have been impacted several times by different types of material to break up, mix, and fuse the various constituent pieces. NWAs are seen by many as the bastard children of the meteorite world. Justasthis label implies, they are scorned, ignored and looked down upon as not being worthy of our attention and scientific scrutiny. But the meteorite world is a bit better off each time one of these precious treasures is recognized for its origins and individual worth to us and the world of science. Whether it be a scientific project or a collector's shelf, we must remember they too hold untold secrets yet to be fathomed - and should be accorded such respect. For many ofthe A to Z's of the meteorite story are likely to be found among these denziens of the desertwhich is whyI love each one of them I have. -Original Message-From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]]On Behalf Of Mark BostickSent: Friday, May 03, 2002 11:39 AMTo: [EMAIL PROTECTED]Subject: [meteorite-list] FREE METEORITE CONTEST TWO! Somehow I think Darryl must be smiling down on us right now. This email brought from my deep admiration of a great mind who never shied away from healthy debate on this subject.
