[meteorite-list] Ebay drama, NEW ID......again!
Apparently, the sellers of the shale have, yet again, changed their Ebay identity. Current Identity: homolovi Previous identities: pahanaswife, bubbamisen, j.c.z.inc. Not that I expect them to be selling any more shale for a while, but just in case I thought I'd add this little "heads up" for everyone buying on Ebay. [meteorite-list] Ebay Fraud Drama!
Hello list! Well, the drama continues. I filed a Fraud Complaint with Ebay yesterday regarding the "Canyon Diablo Meteorite" which as you all know by now, turned out to be iron shale. I have received two responses from Judith McCabe/Colin also known as pahanaswife, bubbamisen, and currently j.c.z.inc. on Ebay. The first was a response to Ebay which was forwarded to me through their system: >Comment Added: Buyer contacted me after 2 months for refund. Item sold wasindeed meteorite as listed in the meteoritic encyclopedia 5th issue. I am contacting my lawer to consider proceedings for the fraud allegation.Slander is another word for it. As I mentioned before in my communication to the list, I contacted the seller the day after I received the product in the mail, received a nasty reply and my subsequent attempts to contact them were ignored. The second comment I received was an email to me directly which I received this afternoon. Hi My lawer has advised me to start legal proceedings against you for the fraud allegation.Which i am very seriously considering. Under section 25 of the slanderous comments act( which comes under federal law) i have the right because the fraud complaint is a false statement and slanderous against my being and integrity. I therefore am considering a class action lawsuit against you because of this. The material sent to you was as discribed in the auction . There was not a mention that it was nickel iron. Furthermore in your own words you have admitted selling this material for 10 years. Which under federal law is illegal under the ireplacable resourse act. I have many paths open to me towards a lawsuit. one being my geology degree and my expirience in the field of astrogeology. But not to beat around the bush i will sue you for every penny you have. Have a wonderful day colin So, it seems that something finally woke them up! :) I find it interesting that one of the comments in the email mentioned that there was nothing that said the material was nickel iron. So, this confirms my previous suspicion that this person knows exactly what they are selling , and is deliberately misrepresenting it as Canyon Diablo meteorite to get a higher price at auction than what it is actually worth. This one is definitely a "rotton apple". Just wanted to pass on the latest news to you all, since I promised to keep everyone informed about what was going on! Re: [meteorite-list] U.S. mail --- A Solution
We have had many problems with long delivery times with our business to overseas both receiving payments and sending items. We finally broke down and setup a FedEX account. When someone needs to send you a payment they need only go to the nearest FedEx office where you can arrange for the payment to be sent to you, they need only bring the payment, FedEx will look up your account and they will do the rest. It is the best solution for sending anything anywhere. We have sent money and items and received money and items from all over the world and have never lost a one, no delay of months and it is trackable and trace-able and worth the extra cash. It gives you the ability to know when someone says the check is in the mailthat IT is actually in the mail. FedEx is worldwide and if you are serious about doing international business it is the only way to go...in my opinion. [meteorite-list] Holbrook and weathering
Hi Steve, Bob and List, Just read your messages about weathering, and in particular Steve's reply regarding Holbrook. I just returned from vacationing in Phoenix, the Grand Canyon (both rims) and Zion. On Memorial Day I talked my wife into taking a slightly (!) out-of-the-way path from Phoenix to the south rim of the Grand Canyon by way of Holbrook. She only had the patience to stop there a little over an hour, and given that it was in the early afternoon, it was quite hot. I'd never been to Holbrook before, so I was happy to find a tiny Holbrook fragment with nice black crust over half its exterior. My first meteorite find from a known fall. It's also my smallest meteorite find -- only 190 milligrams! Anyone who has been to Holbrook must know that hunting there is a good exercise in visual signal processing. A lot of "noise" to filter out... Coincidentally enough, just minutes after we parked another vehicle arrived and parked about 50 yards from us. Given that there's pretty much nothing else around of interest (except perhaps petrified wood), I figured he had to be a meteorite hunter. After eyeing each other for a few moments, he was first to speak -- something along the lines of, "What are you here for?" I coyly countered, "Same thing you are! ;-)" That seemed to be an adequate ice-breaker (or an appropriate exchange of code phrases) and he came over. I'm embarrassed to say that we never got each other's names, but he said he was from Bishop (CA) and had purchased meteorites on eBay before. So, whoever you are, if you happen to be a member of Meteorite Central -- greetings! He went off hunting to the north of me, while I headed slowly eastward. By the time I got back to my car, he had left -- evidently bored, hot, or both. I wish I had had more time there as I was just getting a feel for the terrain, and surely would have found more fragments. But we wanted to get to the G.C. before sunset, so it'll have to wait for another day. Weathering, combined with a fairly dynamic surface. From what I saw, stuff is getting alternately buried and exhumed by wind and water erosion. The small fragment I found was in a smooth blow-out, where I also found old bullet fragments. Hello Everyone, I sent to big irons to buyers last December; one to Philadelphia and the other to Norway. Both were lost by the USPS. I have just setteled with them for payment for Phildephia package but I am still in limbo with regard to the one sent to Norway. I sent both insured, but you really have to jump through postal hoops to get reimbursment from the USPS. -Walter --- Walter Branch, Ph.D. Branch Meteorites 322 Stephenson Ave., Suite B Savannah, GA 31405 USA www.branchmeteorites.com - Original Message - From: "Tracy Latimer" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: "David Freeman" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Cc: "Charlie Devine" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "Jamie Ekholm" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>; "meteorite list" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent: Sunday, June 02, 2002 1:58 PM Subject: Re: [meteorite-list] U.S. mail > Funny story... > About a month ago, I got 2 packages in my mailbox. Re: [meteorite-list] Weathering Grades
Robert Verish wrote "Can you imagine a stone with a "W6" interior having an exterior exhibiting well-preserved, relict fusion crust?" Yes, I think that I have not only imagined one, but seen one-- in a recent fall no less--- Holbrook. This meteorite offers an excellent opportunity for those doing research into meteorite weathering. Samples have been collected from the day of fall to the present, and many of these have beautiful fusion crusts. But when they are cut, the weathering of recent finds becomes apparent (though some of these show little weathering at all, and such are usually restricted to pieces 1 gram or less). In my searches of Holbrook, I have found pieces that are near to pristine, and others just yards away from those that are weathered to the point of being nearly unrecognizable. What I suspect with regards to weathering is that not only do environmental factors play a part, but composition of the meteorite matrix is something to be considered. With the fall of Monahans, a common chondrite it was found that this meteorite contained salt crystals. I suspect that salt is more common to chondritic meteorites than was previously realized, and that its presence in meteorites will greatly affect the preservation of such after they fall to earth-- regardless of where they fall. For as the salt leaches out, and in the presence of oxygen and water it's corrosive action to FeNi will eventually destroy the meteorite matrix. Now, I suspect that the reason that the fusion crust would for Holbrooks be so preserved is that the crust is a glass, and if the matrix had salt this salt would under high temperatures become a flux that would be incorporated into that melt and react with metal and and melted minerals. In essence it would therefore be neutralized-- Hence, after decades of sitting on the ground, the salty matrix would decompose but the fusion crust remain bright and unusually fresh (as is the case with many Holbrooks). It would be interesting if a museum that has thousands of Holbrook stones, such as the Museum of Natural History, or the Smithsonian would take a random sample of their small complete Holbrook stones, and examine them for salt content. I would not be surprised if salt is present in the majority of those that were collected shortly after it fell-- and that would partly explain why so little of it if found today. >200 Kg (16,000 stones in 1912); <30 Kg (several dozen stones between 1931 to 1947 by Nininger); >1kg (several hundred small stones by me from 1967 to presnent); and perhaps a similar amount by the combined effort of others over that same period. After the initial finds of 1912, I suspect that the ever diminishing returns from Holbrook are due more to weathering than collecting. The study of recent falls, and the collection of material from those falls in the years after, offer an excellent opportunity for determining the onset of weathering and how such progresses over a period of time. How long meteorites last on earth after fall is a question that is "up in the air." To a Buddhist, the significance is purley intellectual - sky metal -the concept of space, being the whole point of Buddhism. Sometimes they make ritual implenets out of it. Check this out, Walter! The more "dry lake" meteorites we find, the greater the trend toward a higher average weathering grade for Southwest USA Meteorites. In a nutshell: Dry lakes in the Southwest USA have seasonal wet and dry periods. There will be periods of intermittent standing water on "dry lakes", while other areas in the desert have long since dried-out. What this means is that, for those meteorites which are periodically lying in water on the lakebeds, their interiors will be more weathered compared to those meteorites lying up on well-drained alluvial fans (such as at Gold Basin). The more "dry lake" meteorites we find, the more higher will rise the average weathering grade for Southwest USA Meteorites. All you need to do is take a quick look at TABLE 3 of the current Meteoritical Bulletin to see what I mean. It is rare for a find to be W1. It would require a find location having an environment with excellent states of preservation. Only Borrego, Golden Mile, and Payson are all W1, but none of them came from a dry lake. Granted, Old Dominion Mine is a W3, but I've seen how poor the condition of its exterior, so a W3 grade for its interior means it is comparatively "well-preserved". Now, take a look at the "dry lake" finds, and see how high the average weathering grade is. A "reverse situation" is occurring here. The following observation doesn't appear anywhere in the classification data, but these dry lake meteorites have surprisingly well-preserved exteriors compared to their very weathered interiors. Can you imagine a stone with a "W6" interior having an exterior exhibiting well-preserved, relict fusion crust? You will never see that in a NWA meteorite! But to explain how all of this can happen will require a separate thread [or article]. Later, - Bob V. __ Do You Yahoo!?
